I actually got to see one of my hens poop today. I’m pretty sure there are worms in it....long, white and wriggling around. I’m trying to attach a photo. Please let me know if you know what it is and what I can do. Thanks!
PS. It won’t let me load a picture
3-4 weeks back one of my hens developed a whitish comb and was very lethargic so I brought her in the house and gave her electrolytes for 3 days and she got back to normal. Then 2 weeks ago in the morning when I was opening the coop I found one of my seemingly healthy hens on the ground dead...
My last chick just hatched and it has a big brown something attached to its rear by a thread. Should I cut it off? I thought it would die but its moving all around the incubator pulling this along with it. What is it....a hernia? its stomach? Never seen anything like this before.
Let me give you some background so you can fully understand my situation.
I have an adult flock of 9. This was larger, but since Christmas I have lost 3 hens and 1 rooster to some type of predator. That left me with 6 roos and 3 hens. Yes, I know that ratio is WAY out of whack!! But 4 of...
I have a flock of 9 adult chickens......6 roosters and 3 hens....I know that is out of whack...bear with me a moment...At the end of December I had 7 roosters and 6 hens. Well all on the same day my #1 roo ( a white leghorn) and 1 white bantam hen were killed by a weasel we think. I found them...
I have been trying to determine what type of hen this is. I have 2 of these almost identical. One of them lays an egg everyday that is medium tan in color. I thought she looked a lot like a Welsummer but the eggs are not dark enough. I have hatched 3 chicks from her in my incubator and they...
I'm going to ask a question that may seem dumb to some of you experts. I'm hatching eggs for the second time in my incubator. 1st time I had 23 to start, narrowed down to 12 on day 16, and out of those 12, all 12 hatched. I would say pretty good for the first time. This time I decided to try...
I have a hen with 9 chicks. They are 4-5 weeks old. I moved them outside to their very own chicken coop last Saturday because the weather was going to be really nice here in NC this week. (and I had 12 more hatch out inside with my incubator) That being said....Mama Hen laid an egg...
I have 9 buff brahma bantam chicks that are 4 weeks old. A couple of them have very distinct combs beginning to grow. Is that a good sign that they are roosters?
On the other hand some are still very smooth on their head. Is that a good sign that they are hens?
I started off with 23 eggs.....It's day 20 and I'm down to 12....the candling on day 16 showed me which ones to weed out...I just had 1 to hatch...There is only 1 more that has pipped....what if I have to raise 1 chick by itself....Advice Please!!!!
I have an existing chicken coop that used to be a rabbit hutch. The floor is about 3 feet off the ground and it has wire (small rectangular openings) on all sides so that is what the mama and her 9 chicks will be walking on. Is that okay? I'm a little worried about their feet but I like the...
After 4 years of having chickens I finally had a mother hen hatch out 9 beautiful babies....right in the middle of winter. I have them in my basement in a open wired dog crate. We are in NC so I'm not using a heat lamp just depending on Mama for heat for her babies. Just wondering if the...
I have a rooster that I think is a mix between a buff orpington and a rhode island red. He has been my favorite since March shen we hatched our first flock. I had 10 roosters, sold 8 of them and he was 1 of the 2 I kept. He is just a baby!!! He will follow me around and want me to hold him...
I have a flock of 15...2 roosters and 13 hens.....The other night when I went to make sure all the chickens were back to the coop 1 rooster and a black & white hen did not return from their outing in my backyard...couldn't find them anywhere. The next morning Mr. Butterbutt was back but his...
Today I decided to embark on a new adventure. I took 8 of my 10 roosters to a local stock sale and they were auctioned off. I got $41.00. Pretty good I guess. Now my 2 remaining roosters can have the 13 hens all to themselves. The coop feels bigger and the food will last longer. Good move...
You guys are making me worry. I've been reading that I should have a 1st aid kit. I didn't even know chickens have problems...I guess they just kind of raised themselves except for food and water of course. How do I know if an egg is stuck? Should the chickens be given shots? If so what...
Well yesterday my 23 chickens were running around my backyard and I started hearing a cockadoodledoo....Lo and behold it was my favorite "hen"...NOT....right after that He (whose name has been changed from Elvira to Elvis) began demanding one of my hens to be a hen if you know what I mean. She...
I have 8 nesting boxes in our coop. Is that enough for 2 roosters and 14 hens? Am I supposed to be cleaning them out? They roost in them every night and poop like crazy. Do I need to get them some hay, straw or pine needles to build nests out of...So far they have laid no eggs...they are 4...
My flock is 4 1/2 months old. I normally feed them every evening. The last week one of my hens started pecking my feet. Now more hens and a rooster have started. What can I do to make them stop besides popping them in the head. Also do you think it might be my red toenails they are after or...
