I went to collect eggs yesterday morning, peeked through the coop window, and stopped dead in my tracks.
One of the girls was getting ready to lay (they've only been laying 2 wks now), so I watched. She and Bernadette, my dominant hen were in the coop alone. The hen finished her laying "song...
New to chickens and bursting my buttons with pride so just wanted to share.
DH stopped home this afternoon with his partner (a chicken "expert") and a couple other guys (also chicken people) to show off my 5 month olds.
And the girls gave a good showing!
They saw Bernadette finish laying her...
Ok, new to chickens anad it's been great so far. Then 4 of the 10 began to lay eggs. Bernadette, my dominant (RIR) hen started first and has become not just a nest hog, but a COOP hog! Is this normal?
I watched for 2 hrs today as she was doing the egg-laying dance, in and out of nest boxes...
My RIRs started laying this week (19 wks old) and I find eggs everywhere but in the nestboxes.
I put the boxes in the coop a couple weeks ago with 2 golf balls in each. The girls checked out the boxes, left a few downy feathers in each, and then ignored them, as I expected. All good so far...
Just when you least expect it, it happens! A perfectly formed, though slightly small, miracle. THE FIRST EGG!
Okay, so it was layed on TOP of the nesting box rather than inside, but that didn't stop me from whipping out the cell and sending pix to family, friends, total strangers! I should...
This is my first time raising chickens and we have 10 RIRs who are a few days shy of 16 wks old. One "matured" a couple wks ago with red comb and wattles, 4 caught up with her over the weekend, and the rest are just turning red. I put the nest boxes with the golf balls in the coop over the...
This is the basic recipe, but I'll add green beans, eggplant, potatoes or whatever I feel like.
1 small zucchini, cut in 1/2" cubes
1 small yellow squash, cut into 1/2" cubes
1 medium onion, cut into 1/2" cubes
1 small bell pepper (any color works) cut into 1/2" cubes
2...
DH why we should raise a small gaggle of geese.
He hasn't said "no" yet, but it took 20 yrs to convince him into our small flock of hens!
All positives (and negatives) are greatly appreciated in hopes I can present (and win) my case!
attempting to do something about the huge bite taken from our wallets filling our gas tanks just to get to work!
Steven LaTourette, congressman from Ohio, has proposed legislation to reimburse drivers for a percentage of gas used while commuting to and from work. HR 6154 would reimburse...
I made this up one night when I had more mouths to feed than food. I serve it warm in cool weather and chilled in summer. It is a definite hit with everyone!
1 pound penne pasta
1 pound chicken breasts (bone in, skinned)
1 pound romaine lettuce
1/2 pound cherry or grape tomatoes...
Light, fluffy and foolproof enough that even a Northerner can't fail! All my attempts so far have been disappointing, to say the least!
I figure with all the great cooks here at byc, someone can help me?
We have an over-population of Canadian Geese where I live, and of course right now they are raising their young.
On the way home this evening, DH and I crossed a small bridge with water on either side, and where wild ducks, geese and swans raise their young. The bridge is at the bottom of two...
I was out in the yard with my 6 1/2 wk old girls yesterday when I heard a "cluck" amidst the normal chirps. Excitedly, I waited for more, but nothing else.
It was repeated again this afternoon. Just once, a definite "cluck".
Makes me think of that Pamper's commercial....."Mommy, wow! I'm a big...
There is an on line petition to make our voices heard. This is courtesy of Newt Gingrich (love or hate him, at least he's trying to do something!). If interested, the site is

Please take a minute to sign the petition and read the link to Chuck Norris's commentary...
DH and I have always been able to care for our family while still able to share with others. We're far from rich but somehow always had enough to share. Middle-class.
I've been watching buying patterns in our "mixed" community the last few months. There are those with the Coach bags who still...
My Grandmother made these and my Mom lost the recipe when she moved (unfortunately I never had it). She made these in a crock, like for sauerkraut, since they required no canning process.
I was hoping someone here would know what these are, and better yet, be willing to share the recipe. They...
I'm very new to chickens and thought I was prepared for when they feathered out.
No one told me I'm raising baby vultures! What goofy (but sweet) looking creatures they are at 4 wks! Kind of similar to kids without their front teeth.
Now I'm really excited to see how beautiful they become, my...
DH was just talking about the feeder and how the girls like to perch on it and how amazing it is that they don't fall in. Well........heard panicked chirping from the brooder and when we investigated found not 1 but 2 (4 wk old) chicks in the feeder!
They both seem fine, but any ideas on how...
The weather here has been so chilly and wet I can't take the 4 week old "kids" outside to play.
Any ideas on how to bring the outdoors in? Should I even worry about it and just wait for warmer weather? Or should I just take them outside for 5-10 mins?
All ideas are welcome at this point!
