For all of those chickens that turn their beaks from shredded carrots, I have found the trick: mix some flower or cornmeal in with the carrots and your chickies will devour the healthy snack with a vengeance.
It is supposed to get real cold the next few nights (down to 0 degrees). My 7 girls and 1 roo are in an insulated and draft free coop and have done very well so far. We have had nights in the lower teens and they did fine, but I have been wondering how much cold they can take.
I'm trying to calculate the cost for raising baby chicks to sell them at cost next spring. I need to know how much a baby chick eats during its first 6 weeks in life. Do 5 pounds sound right?
I heard a few voices saying that the Welsumer stock from the larger hatcheries might not be very good. So, I'm hoping the get your opinions on that topic.

Let me introduce Leopold my golden laced wyandotte cockerel:
He and the flock of 7 girls turned 4 months this week. He is currently going through his adolescent molt and the beautiful rooster feathers are coming in. He is finally growing tail feathers too. He has had some sort of bunny but with...
My gently BR Lucy of nearly 3 months stopped walking today. At about 2 weeks old I noticed that her legs were not as steady as they should have been. Gradually her toes started curling in and then her hocks became weaker all the while she was able to keep up with her flock of otherwise healthy...
I have one to many boys: 8 weeks old, good looking and in need for his own flock of girls. I will post a pic later today.
I will not ship. I live in the Middlebury area and might be willing to drive him 50 or more miles if that helps. He is from my first flock ever and naturally I would like to...
So, here is my friendly golden-laced Wyandotte, should-be-hen, but I have my doubts. The pics were taken at around 6 weeks of age:
In the meantime I call "him" Leopold...Would you guys agree?
I'm looking for tips on determining the gender in young Ameraucanas/Easter Eggers at around 6 to 8 weeks old.
What are looking for? How do you make your determination??
