Can heat affect egg production?? We have 8 laying hens and we are down to four eggs a day! I can't figure for the life of me what's going on. Do you have any thoughts?? Thanks!
My broody hatched out 8 eggs. They are a week old now. I found the first dead chick 4 days ago, didn't seem to have any trauma (stepped on), plenty of food/water. Last night I found the second chick clinging onto life. She was freezing cold. I rushed her inside, trying to warm her and gave...

We are thinking about getting two goats as lawnmowers. We have a number of areas that are too wet to mow (around creek beds and trees). I've owned livestock, but never goats. Any words of wisdom? What breeds are nicer (I have young children). Thanks!
You have seen my new peeps from my broody, but you haven't seen my 3 week old pullets lately, so here they are in their big girl feathers!! I am so curious to see them all grown up and the colors!! The close ups are my EE's and I also have Wellies and GLW!!! BTW, does anyone think they can...
I thought my Candy would never do it!! I checked on her this morning and I had 3 little black heads poke out! My daughter wanted to go out now and double check and we have another little baby!! We have a seven eggs left and a couple look to be pipped (I didn't look at the eggs, but looked...
So my broody is set to hatch tomorrow. I went into the coop today to let the girls out (broody is confined) and she was pacing back and forth, trying to get out of her pen! Usually she is very calm and sitting on her nest. I do not understand this behavior! She did let out a huge stinky...
So here we are, due to hatch on Saturday (21 days). Should I be hearing any peeping yet? I don't see any changes if I lift her wing, but I don't want to disturb them too much. Will I even hear anything? When do I call it quits if they don't hatch? Thanks!
So, I couldn't take it anymore. I was forced to get that mamma out of the nest and give her a brand new one! She was pretty ripe! Well, I know (from all of you) how much a broody poop smells, but never experienced it first hand. I made her get out of the nest and low and behold, she pooped...
I went into the barn last night to candle my eggs. I found one rotten and one infertile. The rest had a black mass inside (no movement could be seen). We are about 11-12 days. My question is that when I candled the eggs, about 9 out of 12 of the eggs, the mass was on the side of the egg an...
So I couldn't help but candle the eggs tonight (day 11) just to see what is going on. This is my first ever hatching and I've never had a broody. Anyway, there were 12 eggs that seemed to be developing pretty well, dark masses in all of them, air sacs. I couldn't see any movement, but didn't...
So I just received my babies today. I can pick out my Welsummers (brown ones that have chipmunk stripes), but I can not tell which are my EE's and my GLW. Some are dark with chipmunk stripes and some are close to that but a little mottled. To throw me off even more, I have 1 packing peanut in...
So I got my new babies in the mail today! We have 5 welsummers, 5 EE's, and 5 GLW, and 1 packing peanut! Not sure which chick is the extra. I'm also not sure which breeds are which! Any thoughts are welcome!!!
So two days before my chicks come in the mail, I end up with a broody hen! What are the chances of that?? I don't trust her to take the 15 chicks I ordered. She is young and I'm afraid she'll reject them. I was planning on raising them myself. Now, she's sitting on 15 fertilized eggs of...
Now, I'm not sure why I am having such a hard time making this decision. My 2 year old was standing on the driveway and his laughing scared our roo. He puffed up and jumped on my sons back, knocking him down and scratching his face. They were minor scratches so my son was just really...

So I am to receive a shipment of 15 new babies tues or weds. (ship date monday). I have been all set up for these new arrivals and low and behold, I found a new broody hen today! She has only started being broody today. I enclosed her, gave her food and water. She's sitting on 15 eggs and...
