All hens and someone is really picking about 7 hens feathers. I have 16 total. I've watched and can't tell by the behavior that I've seen. Just "get away from that, it's mine" pecks.
Two hens are bald on the back with fresh quills pecked daily. I have isolated who I thought were the offenders...
We're looking for egg white recipes.
Dh is diabetic so we aren't looking for desserts, but protein rich egg white dishes. He also needs to back off the meat for other reasons so egg whites were suggested. Any ideas?
Does anyone know of a seller of show quality Blue Andalusian chicks?
To be specific, I prefer not splash or any color other than blue.
I know the blue chicks are fairly true to color at hatch.
Or am I just going to have to take my chances with a hatchery? Is there a hatchery that is known for...
I glanced out the window after a pleasant 30 minutes here on BYC and was startled to see one of my Black Australorp pullets loose and standing on the pond dam about 25 feet from the window. As I ran to get my coat I remembered that hawks don't all fly south for the winter, ah, ah, and my mind...
We went to several county fairs this year to look at the 4-H chickens.
As our chicks were growing leaps and bounds since the day we received them as day old hatchery chicks, we wondered how big they would eventually be.
The fair pullets and hens were huge and we thought ours would be that size...
Is there a chart or measurement used for sizing eggs?
My Light Brahma's first egg is huge! It is bigger than an extra large store bought egg by 1/2 inch lengthwise. Ouch!!! Like an extra-jumbo.
How am I going to find cartons that these will fit in for selling?
First egg!
Tried to scan it on my printer but it was fuzzy. So, here's the details:
Red Star Sex Link, my smallest chicken is the first to lay at 22 weeks old.
Started the light 2 weeks ago and just like someone mentioned in another thread the laying has begun exactly 2 weeks later. It...
Do the pullets display a different behavior when they are ready to lay?
Do they stay in the nest box prior to laying the first egg or go in and out a lot? Mine are ignoring the nests at this point of 21 weeks.
Do they have a certain vocalization before or as they are laying the first time? Are...
Should I be sifting through the deep litter to find eggs? None have been laying yet that I know of. There are plenty of nest boxes ready and waiting with the fake eggs and golfballs.
When I get out to the coop at daylight they have the litter scratched up pretty good because they have a light...
We built our nest boxes but wonder how far from the nest the perch should be? We have a 4 1/2" board across the bottom of the nest to prevent the nesting material from falling out. Now we need to add the perch and are stumped!
Should I be looking at the combs and wattles to enlarge just before my girls begin to lay? My pullets are 17 weeks and have so little in that department that I can't imagine them beginning to lay anytime soon. Will a girl with immature looking comb and wattles lay?
The feed store told me to hang the brooder light above the water in the coop to keep it from freezing.
My chickens are 17 weeks and I wondered if this would be end up being too many hours of light. They suggested keeping it on 24/7 in below freezing temps.
Has anyone done this?
We have just changed the pop door from opening with a hinge to sliding open. Eye screws to guide opening and closing using a rope from outside the pen.
What type of rope works best for the sliding door method in a freezing cold winter area. Would a pulley be better than all eye screws?
We...
Does anyone give their chickens fresh pond water to drink? I have a quarter acre pond with some fish in it. No algae what so ever; it is a very healthy oxygenated pond. Can I just dip the bucket in and give to the chickens? They have been getting rain water from an in-ground cistern but the pond...
I wish I had found this site before I ordered, for one thing. I definitely would have built the coop first before the chicks came. We finally finished the coop enough to get the girls out of our living room. We don't have a garage yet so they were in the house.
16 ten week old chickens should...
We have red shouldered and red tailed hawks here and been told a couple of nesting bald eagles.
I can see them going after chicks and pullets but are hens too big for them?
Wouldn't a fully grown Light Brahma be a little large?
I'd like to free range them in the yard but I can't be out there...
I was buying pine wood shavings in a bale for $6 from a feed mill. These were low dust, smelled wonderful and really absorbed well. I realized that I needed more, but it was Sunday and the feed mill was closed. So, I went to the Tractor Supply where I knew they have pine shavings in a bale, got...
We have seen pics of both interior and exterior nests.
Would there be a problem with the exterior nest in colder northern areas? I don't mean outside. What I like about those is no perching on top and more floor space. Are there any drawbacks?
