Woke up this morning at the house was covered with shad flies (AKA fish flies, may flies) Here's what a shad fly is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayfly
I swept up a dust pan full of them and took them out to my big girls in the coop and they went nuts. So I wondered if my 5 day old chicks...
Good morning!
I've noticed that 2 of my chicks have some poop on their buts. I checked and their vents are not obstructed but the poop is just stuck to the fluff under their vents. (Kind of like when a kid doesn't wipe himself properly - grin) Should I be concerned about this?
Thanks.
I ordered 2 Barred Rocks and I'm gonna call them The Rockettes!
I'm SO excited! This is my first time as a chick mom and I've spent the morning setting up an old recycling bin as a brooder.
I'll post pics when I get them. Wish me luck.
I know it's not poisonous but it's about 2 feet long and about 1.5 inches thick. Could be either a northern ribbon snake or a Butler's garter snake???? It's taken up residence right next to my coop and is sporting a big bulge in its belly which may explain why I found one of my girls' eggs in...
I know, this does sound like a dumb question but my city friends keep asking me and I really don't know.
I could be wrong but I understand that on commercial farms the roos are butchered early and the hens are generally kept to lay for 18 to 24 months before they too are butchered.
But what...
I got a can of Danish butter cookies for Christmas and with the empty tin and a photo I saw here describing it, I made a cookie can water heater.
I found the socket and cord in the lighting aisle at Canadian Tire (total cost 10 bucks) and put the thing together over the weekend. I'm using a 40...
These store-bought eggs look like mutants compared to my girls' little blue-green ones.
My girls are molting so I haven't had any eggs in nearly 3 weeks -
Sure hope they resume laying when they get their feathers back.
My girls started to molt this fall. Egg production fell by 75% - I have 4 hens and was only getting one egg a day.
Now it seems that the others aren't loosing as many feathers as before but my white hen Meringue, is loosing tons of feathers and they all seem to be coming from her chest. I can't...
We moved their hoop house into the garden figuring that we'd let the chickens do our weeding and fertilizing for us. They absolutely loved it!
They are doing a great job at gobbling up all the weeds and are loving pecking around for bugs and worms. But the best part is that they are giving...
Well, we wanted to get the girls out of their winter digs and give them a summer home. We couldn't get them into Girl Guides or ballet class so the next best thing was a nice summer camp. We also wanted to move them around the yard every few days so they have a chance to feast on all the yummy...
Walking around my neighbourhood the other day I saw a dog house for sale. This dog house is SOLID, shingled and well built. It's approximately 3.5' x 3' and has a sloped roof that goes from 5 to 4 feet. They only want 50 bucks for it and I think, with a few simple modifications (window, extra...
I have 4 hens and I swear one of them is having a gender identity crisis. Every morning she perches on top of the saw horse and starts calling so loud you'd think she was a rooster. She does this between 7 and 9am every morning. At first I thought this was a dominance thing but she's not the...
I've got two 55 gal barrels of worms (e. foetida) sitting in my shed making compost for my spring garden. When I got the chickens last August I had hoped that I could feed them the worms over the winter as a good protein source.
Over the summer and fall they went wild over all the crickets and...
Just thought I'd put up some pics of our hastily assembled winter accommodations. We built the Catabwa Coop this fall but as it got colder, we figured it wouldn't be warm enough to keep our girls over the winter. Just after we got our girls I was in a little car accident and haven't been able to...
In the past two weeks I've noticed one of my chickens acting strangely.
When I walk into the coop she squats down and spreads her wings out a little. I leaned down to pet her and she did that thing that cats do when you run your hand along their back towards their bum - she raised her bum...
Hello again.
Here's a question for those of you who know something about solar panels.
I have a marine battery and inverter that's come in handy to keep a radio going during a couple of black outs. I was thinking that I might be able to use these to supply electricity to my small coop. My idea...
Hello everybody,
We built the Catawba coop. When you buy the Catawba coop plans you also get a file of the plans made with a free program called Google Sketch Up. Because I'm a geeky girl I downloaded the program and started to play with it.
We love the original coop but now after having our...
Ok, maybe it's because being a chicken mom is new for me but (and I can only admit this here), sometimes I sit on a little stool outside the coop and just watch the chickens. I find it relaxing like watching fish in an aquarium and just plain amusing to see how they react to different foods.
Am...
