I have a large Cuckoo Maran named Sol. He has really large spurs and they are getting very long. I think he is going to trip himself one of these days. How do I shorten them? Thanks, rughooker

    Blood spots in eggs

I have been selling big brown eggs for a couple of years. I have about 20 hens, but only 12 lay. I also have 4 roosters. Sometimes I notice blood inside the egg, so I know they are fertilized. Do you think that the people who buy my eggs get grossed out if they come across these little...

    barebacked hens

I have a couple of hens who have been" loved " a little too much by one of my roosters. Their necks have been pecked raw and one of them has a bare back. I ordered some hen aprons for them, but in the meantime , is there any kind of salve I can put on them? Or will the salve just attract...

I am going to Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio on Tuesday to pick up some day old d'uccles. I will keep them under a heating lamp until they don't need it anymore. After that, can I put them with my 2 silkie hens? They lay an egg once in awhile, then lay on it for days thinking it's going to...

    Hatching peeps

My little black and red speckled hen's eggs are hatching as I type. I already have seen a fuzzy little yellow one and a black one. Looks like there are maybe 6 eggs left to hatch. When do I step in and help with water and chickie grain? Right now mama is lying on eggs and peeps. She's...

My silkie's eye won't stay open

I bought 4 silkie pullets a few weeks ago and one of them had both of her eyes shut. I kept putting warm compresses on them and one is now open. The other one opens when I'm working on it, but closes as soon as I am done. Is there anything else I can do? She is probably 3 months old. Thank you

    Aggressive Cochin Roos

I watched the other day as my three roos chased and got on top of my favorite little silkie. I yelled at them and she got away. Later in the evening, I went out and found her dead. She looked like she had been pecked to death. I know I have too many roosters, now that they are getting older...

    Chick never stops peeping!

I have a 6 week old silkie(splash). It hardly ever stops peeping. I have 3 ( 2 mo. old) white silkies that are so quiet compared to him/her. Is he/she trying to tell me something is wrong or does he/she just like to make noise? Splash has been like this since I got him/her at 2 weeks of age.

    My New Avatar

Thought I should have an avatar that goes with my username. I've been primitive rughooking for about four years. Never thought I'd be using this pic ( one of my first ) to use as an avatar on BYC. I didn't have chickens then either!

My banties are still in the maple tree!!!

I posted a message back in July about 16 of my peeps being killed in their coop early one morning. Their moms and dads watched in horror. That evening 6 banties and one saved peep roosted in one of my maple trees. I still don't know how that tiny little peep got up there. It is Sept.3rd and...

    roosting silkies and bantam cochins

I read somewhere that bantam cochins don't like to roost very high. Some would rather lie under a bush at night. I have roosts in my coop, but the're kind of high. How high should I make them? The same question for silkies. Thanks!
