Hi all, I would like to build a coop for my meat birds when I get them and I was wondering about the design. I know that roost are not pratical but I would think they still need to get up off the ground at night. I also need to keep predators in mind. If anyone could post a picture of their meet...
Hi all, my rhode island red rooster is young, (no tail feathers yet), is still learning to crow, (sounds like he has a sore throat) and as far as I can tell in good health. He is active with the ladies also, but here is my concern. His feet and legs started out a nice strong yellow but now have...
Hi all, I would like to see a full grown RIR rooster. I have a young one but I would love to see one full grown to see how he will turn out. If anyone out there has one, could you post his picture please? Thanks.
Hi all, I have a hovabator 1588 with a electronic thermostat and a fan. What should the humidity be at? 40%. or closer to 60%. I'm not talking about when you raise the humidity just before the hatch. I mean for most of the time the eggs are developing. Thanks
Hi all, Does any have pictures of a black sex-link rooster. How are they? Are they mean? I have black sex link eggs in my incubator so I know there will be a few roosters in the bunch. I also know the black sex-link trait does not breed true. For that reason nobody whats them, so I'd like to...
I toying with the idea of getting a rooster. I have 8 hens and my family enjoys their company and we eat their eggs. I would only keep the rooster for the color and the drama. I know a good portion if not all of the eggs would be fertile once the rooster comes of age. I was woundering about...
I'm thinking of keeping one of the males out of my next hatch of chicks. It would ether be a black sex-link male or a RIR. If you were to keep one which one would it be? I'm keeping him just for the fun of having him. I know or herd that ether can be aggressive. any thoughts? Thanks for any replies.
I'm thinking of getting a rooster. If anyone has a RIR or a Barred rock roster could you please post a picture. Also what about their personalities? If anyone has a black sexlink roo I would like to check him out also. Thanks to everyone in advance and happy holidays!
Hi all. Could someone please post a picture of a black sx-link rooster. I have never seen a full grown male and I heard they are pretty cool looking. And how are their personalities? I heard they could be pretty rotten. Thanks
Hi all! I have a quick question regarding composting of chicken manure. My chickens, nine in total, have pine wood shavings in the coop for bedding. I have started a composting pile with the hopes of using the broken down matter in my garden. Can you compost the pine shavings? I have ALOT of...
One of my RIRs has bloody feet from the other hens picking on her. They are pullets that are laying. I've tried cleaning the injured area with peroxide and triple anti-biotic cream then covering the area with the blu-kote spray to cover up the red wounds. It heals, then just when I think she's...
What else can I do? I cleaned the wound with peroxide and then coated the whole foot with blu-kote to hide the wound from further picking and to promote healing. I can't really take her out of the coop, because, I don't have a "hospital" coop. How did I do? Thanks for any replies
Hi all just a quick question here-
My five hens go through a five pound bag of oyster shells pretty fast. Are there other forms of calcium I can feed the birds? Can you buy the oyster shells in bulk sizes other than 5lb. bags?, so I can save some money.
Hi all. I was wondering, how do pearl leghorns do in a cold climate like New England? I've heard they are thinner than RIR and BR and I know those breeds can take the cold very well. And how do they get along with other breeds? I've also heard they tend to be nervous birds. Thanks for any replies.
Hi all, does anyone out there have a automatic waterer that will keep a constant level in a bowl or cup and work off the house pressure from a garden hose? I'm not talking about the gravity feed waterers that you need a bucket for. Something that works off house pressure. Thank you in advance!
Has anyone ever had a broody RIR or a Barred Rock? I know RIR are bred for egg laying and that trait was bred out of them, but I was just wondering.........
I let them out,(5 hens/pullets) just before dusk to let them run around for a short time. Now they have never been out free and clear and the seemed to love it. I had one RIR, I think she is the top bird, and she didn't seem to want to go back as it started to get dark. The other 4 were already...
I just got back from the feed store and I realized I bought a 50 lbs of feed and not layer pellets that I've been feeding my pullets. Is one type better than the other? If all they had was pellets, will they eat the feed? It looks like sand to me and I don't know if older birds or larger pullets...
