My cockatiel is laying more eggs than my chickens!

Of course, my chickens are only about 7 weeks old, so it's not too surprising! We recently adopted "Rosie" from an elderly lady who had to move into an assisted living facility... this silly bird has laid 2 eggs in the last 3 days! She sits on it & tries to protect it, but as soon as I take it...

All my girls were roosting this morning! (and pecking order Q)

Only you folks here will understand my excitement. When I opened their pop hole this morning & peeked in, all 6 girls were roosting! 5 on the middle roost & poor little Belinda on the bottom roost by herself, but roosting nonetheless! 3 of them seem to be vying for top hen... at what age do...

Should I make them go inside?

My girls range from 5 to about 7 weeks old. They will go into their coop when it gets dark, but it's cold outside today-- in the 50's. It's windy & overcast & they are huddled in a pile in their outside run. Should I pick them up and put them in the coop where there's a light & it's warmer, or...

    FIR shavings okay?

Being that I live in the land of fir trees, it's not surprising that the local feed store has big bales of fir shavings, but not pine. They also have "soft wood" (no cedar). What do you think? Okay to use?

Feeder/waterer inside and outside? How many of each?

I just have 6 girls. I'm thinking I need a waterer both inside the coop and outside in the pen. My question, though is whether I need a feeder both inside & outside as well. It seems like too much to have two feeders, but where should I keep it-- inside the coop our out in the run? They have...

Are chicks who are raised by a hen less friendly?

I think what I would like to do is wait for one of my hens to go broody, hopefully next spring/summer & get some fertile eggs for her to hatch (and then just find homes for the inevitable roosters! ). There's a farm just down the street from me that sells hatching eggs. I think it would be...

Big thank you to everyone who encouraged me to get Buff Orps!

My two little girls are the sweetest, funniest birds! They ran right up to me & today started jumping up on me & playing with my hair & the buttons on my sweater as I sat in the run with a cup of tea. They are just so sweet & friendly. The next friendliest are my Black Austrolorps... the Barred...

    Chick order co-ops???

This is way early to even be thinking about it, but I'm just wondering if people here who live within a reasonable driving distance from each other ever get together & share chick orders? Next spring I want to add up to 4 girls to my flock, but the breeds I'm starting to research-- blue laced...

First day with the girls in their pen... pics

Okay, I know these are kind of common (the pics and the birds!), but still. This was the girls' first day trying out their "big girl" chicken pen & it went swimmingly. They ran & jumped & flapped their wings & peeped & scratched & payed no mind at all to the dogs, who were losing their ever...

So, one of my Black Australorps...

has white feathers at the tips of both of her wings... is she a mystery breed or is it possible for BA's to have some white feathers? She's from the feed store.

My coop is finished! *Updated with final pics!!!* Please look.

I'm very excited! DH & his friend are building the coop & run this weekend. The coop is DH's own design & will be elevated & 4' x 8'. The run will surround the coop & will be 12' x 16'. I'll update with pics during progress. Here's the catch-- I already know this coop will not be big enough...

You all are freakin' me out!!! My BR's cannot be roo's!

Please tell me these aren't roo's! They are about 4 weeks old, I believe. They were a couple of weeks older than all the other birds I got, so have always been larger and more feathered-- I attributed the comb size to their age. Their combs are not red & there are no wattles developing...

    How is this comfortable?!

Look at these little dorks! I put this little makeshift perch in their brooder so they could start learning how to perch, and they do perch-- it's pretty cute! But, they also sleep like this. Silly chickens!

When can the babies have treats?

They literally jump on anything they think they might be able to eat... when can I start giving them treats like fruits & veggies? 4 of them are a few days old the other 2 are probably a week old or so.

Identification: Black Astralorps vs. Barred Rock Chicks!

Well.. I thought I knew which was which, but maybe not! They look so much alike. Any way to tell which is which? The all have wing feathers coming in, and only one doesn't have white tips on them. There are supposed to be 2 BR's & 2 BA's.

My first flock is home safe! Come see...

2 Barred Rocks, 2 Black Austrolorps & 2 Buff Orpingtons! The Rocks (at least I think it's the Rocks-- need to look at chick pics again to be sure) are a little older than the others-- starting to get some tail feathers & the comb on one of them is more developed than the others (that's...

    Should I or shouldn't I: Buff Orps

I'm going to pick out chicks tomorrow & I'm conflicted. Can you help? I want chickens for eggs-- I keep reading about how wonderful and friendly and beautiful the buff orpingtons are & every time I look at the pics, they call to me, but I also keep reading that they are not the best egg...

For my brooder set up I need...

A cardboard box Some pine shavings A couple of shallow dishes for chick mash & water A thermometer Chick mash A heat lamp w/reflector??? Can anyone help me on this part-- what exactly do I need here? A standing lamp? A clip-on lamp? How do you adjust it to change the temp each week? Anything...

Just called my local feed store!

They have a fantastic selection of baby chicks! I can't remember all she said, but she listed off Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Ostrolorps and about 5 other kinds! Sexed! I am so excited! Looks like I won't have to order through the mail to get what I want-- I for sure wanted Barred Rocks...

How many weeks from delivery of chicks to outside in coop???

I am seeing that most supply places offer chicks through May, which means if we want chickens this year, I will need to place an order soon. We have plans for a coop, but no actual coop yet. How many weeks will the chicks be inside our house in a brooder? In other words, once the babies arrive...
