    Hatch with a broody

I did my first egg hatching with a broody hen. I had my white silkie sit on 4 eggs. 2 of them never developed, one of them hatched 3 days ago and the second chick hatched this evening. She sat on the 2nd chicks egg the whole time, until it came out. I just found it cold and lifeless in the nest...

    Sour Crop death :(

We lost our first chicken out of our flock that we started back in February. I believe she had sour crop and I kick myself for not seeing the early symptoms. I believe by the time we caught it, it was just too late. She was laying on the ground, completely out of it, weak and lethargic. Her crop...

    No eggs

My 7 month old chickens went from laying eggs to no eggs over the last couple weeks. I treated them for vent gleet because some of them were having big nasty messes in the coops me yucky bottoms and I had a suspicion that our nipple watering system was not being used by them. We have fixed out...

    Sick lethargic chicken ;(

My friends chicken is a 6 month old speckled Sussex, she recently fell ill. Lethargic, yellow poop, not eating much an not drinking much. They have isolated her from the flock. She was laying eggs, but not anymore. Any ideas? Not sure if she should just be culled? Thank you!

    Sick chickens?

I have 16 chickens, different breeds: brahmas, buff orps, barred rocks, partridge rocks. They are 6 months old and about a month ago most all of them started laying eggs. They were producing 5-10 eggs a day for a week or so and then all of a sudden they went down to 2 eggs every other day. On...

Sneezing/runny nose in 8 wk old chick

I have one of my 16 chickens that started sneezing, she has a clear runny nose. No other symptoms. My chickens were just recently moved outdoors this week into their coop. Temps are 50s during the day and low 40s at night. We use a 100 watt bulb in the coop at night. Our climate here is damp, as...

Too cold for 6 week old chickens?

My standard chickens have just turned 5 and 6 weeks old. I am ready to kick them out into their coop! But I live in southeast Alaska and I'm not sure it's warm enough yet. It is 40s during the day and I've been bringing them out in their run during the daytime, they seem to enjoy that. But at...

I've noticed that my other breeds of chicks (SS, BO, BR) have started showing little combs at 4 weeks, however, my light brahmas area above their beaks are smooth and show nothing..... Can you tell if this is female? 4 weeks old

Ok to take away feed at night?

I live on a small island that has run out of feed and I am awaiting a shipment of chick feed into town, I might run short of my feed by a few days. Could anyone please advise if it would be ok for me to supplement my 3 week old chicks with something else? Or maybe take their food dishes away at...

    Interesting advice....

Last month I received an order of chicks from McMurray, upon arrival, 14 of my 16 bantams I ordered were dead, or on their last breath :( it sucked. We disposed of the dead ones. The following week I got a call from a friend saying she had heard about our dead loss and had mentioned it to her...

Could anyone tell me what would be better for a poop board/litter box under my roosting bars? The feed store I'm ordering from sells it in granules and a powder.... Which should I get?

    Parakeet Grit OK?

I purchased grit at the store today, but all they had was parakeet grit.... I figured grit was grit, but then I read a post on an old thread NOT to give parakeet grit b/c it has too much calcium. Is this true? What would the extra calcium do to the chickens? Thanks for any feedback!!
