    My first keet

Not the best pic, i know, but it was so squirmy i was afraid it would make a break for it. My guineas had just started back laying so i tossed one of the first eggs in the bator to see if they were fertile, hoping to be able to tell in a week or so and add more. But that darn thick shell...

    baby mallard won't open eyes

I had a baby mallard to hatch yesterday and today when I went to take it out of the hatcher, I noticed it won't open its eyes. It did briefly crack one open but quickly shut it back. Pulled down lid on other side...immediately shut eye back. It has eyeballs, eyes aren't crusted shut, but won't...

    Welsummer Roo?

I think one of my welsummer pullets is really a roo. All of a sudden I just noticed how much brighter the feathers were all over and how red its comb is compared to the other. The guy I bought them from said he'd switch out any roos but now I have to resist the impulse to keep him and add...

    Straw vs Hay

So, I've read not to use hay in nest boxes because it can harbor mites. Then I just read to soften concrete floors with a covering of straw. What's the difference? Doesn't straw also have a hollow center? What's the difference? It didn't say pine straw, just straw. Thanks!

    Guineas and water

So who knew guineas could swim? One swam 70 yards across my pond to escape a dog. It didn't appreciate our rescue, or being wrapped in a towel or being dried off either. All other 9 had gotten back in the coop without any further encouragement.

How long to isolate new chickens from current chickens

I bought 4 young pullets from a gentleman and was wondering how long to keep them separate from my current birds? I have them in a separate cage but eventually want to set that inside my big pen so they can get used to each other before putting everyone together. So I guess I have 2 questions-...

    Finally found local Royal Purples!

I am so excited to have finally found some local royal purple guineas! After asking so many people and probably being a general pest (thanks to everyone who was so helpful, several of which were on BYC), I found some that are about 6 months old and only 16 miles away. Going to look after...
