My 2 1/2 year old Buff Orp is really sick!! She's losing weight, has diarrhea (all over her bum, ew), and she's just laying around. I had to literally force-feed her this morning. Anybody know what this is?? Is there a cure? WILL MY OTHER CHICKENS GET IT?
All insights are appreciated!
I have a very small flock - 8 hens. I just got the last 2 a few days ago.
The first 6 had eaten eggs before, but they haven't laid in a while (they're 2 years old), and I JUST got 2 more and already the old chickies have taught them to eat their eggs! :'( How do I fix this?? Please help!!
A bit of a problem:
I used to get abut 7-8 eggs per day (I have 8 hens). But for a few weeks now I've been only getting 1 egg per day, if that! Do any of y'all know what's wrong here and how to fix it?
It has been raining a lot here lately... I don't know if the lack of sunlight is causing...
I was wondering if y'all could give me a little advice.
It's been raining like CRAZY down here in the South for the past couple of weeks. My little hens are in a coop (not free ranging), and I'm wondering what I can do for them.
I lay down as much hay/bedding on the mud (coughswamplandcough)...
I took some pictures of two of my girls yesterday. These are the only two who are laying - the other six need to catch up soon!
Clara, one of my Buff Orps - a.k.a 'Little Miss Attitude'.
And here's Kelli, my Ameraucana. Her eggs are bright green!
That's all I've got for now.

I was just given a new hen and my other hens aren't accepting her at all. I know I just can't throw her in with the others, but for the past two days I've been letting them have supervised play time, and it's always cut short because the other hens are pecking at her, so.
Do y'all have any...
My poor roo, Nelson was attacked by our boxer-mix dog today (OH I WANT TO KILL THAT DOG!). Thank the Lord, he survived the attack, but I don't know what to do. Right now I have him inside with a heat lamp and plenty of clean hay/shavings and food/water, etc. He doesn't seem to be interested in...
Look how big my girls are! They are 5 weeks old!!
Clara:
Jane:
Lucy:
Mable:
Molly:
Nellie (or possibly Nelson O_O):
Olive:
Sally and Susy (can't exactly tell these apart-they're my "twins"):
Well there you have it. Aren't they adorable?!
My chicks are going to be six weeks old in a few days. Is it time for them to go outside for good? I'm just so protective of them....I want to make sure everything will be alright!
What do I do if it gets cold during the night? Will they be okay? Is it normal that they are supposed to go...
Sorry if this is TMI, but:
Some of my chick's droppings are very wet and slimy (YUCK) and some of them are normal-firmish. So I'm wondering...what is normal? Is this supposed to be happening or is there something wrong with my chicks? Is there something I can feed them to fix this? All they eat...
Um, my chicks are flying everywhere. Are they supposed to be doing that? O_O Sometimes they fly up and hit their heads on the top of their brooder. And whenever I open up the brooder atleast a couple of them ALWAYS fly out.
I thought chickens weren't suppsed to fly! Ack!
I ordered 8 Buff Orps 2 weeks ago, and I got 9. I didn't think anything of it...but now I'm wondering if that little packing peanut could be a rooster!
The only thing that leads me to believe this is because s/he is MUCH bigger than the others (BUT I actually have TWO big ones....that are MUCH...
I have three questions:
1.Is this a good grit substitute? (I read that you don't necessarily have to buy it)
2. Do my chicks really need it?
3. If so, when do I need to give it to them?
Thanks for the help y'all!!
Do we already have a photography thread? Oh well, I'm making one anyway. Because I'm a crazy-photography obsessed person.
Anywho, here are some of my pictures...
To be continued...
Hi! I've actually been a member for several weeks around here, but I just now found this thread! lol
So I'll introduce myself:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I'm brand new! Three families that I know have chickens, but this is the first time my family has...
My first chicks ever come to me on Sunday. 8 Buff Orps. I. AM. SO. EXCITED! My friend whom I'm splitting the order with gets them tomorrow (!!) and so they'll be almost a week old when he delivers them to me, but I'm still a little scared, because I know they're SO fragile at first.
I've...
I didn't see an answer to this question in the learning center so...
I was just wondering, are you supposed to leave the heat lamp in your brooder on the babies for the first six weeks, all the time? Or can you turn it off when they start to get a little bigger?
Thanks for the help!
