She's a 1 yr old bantam cross. Has anyone seen this? It is hanging from her vent. I've put it back in but it eventually slips out. She's isolated. Spunky. Laying. I just can't figure out what this is? A teste? A growth?
Thanks for your help.
Hi -
The molting has started and I've noticed that myfavorite hen who is usually friendly and comfortable has become a bit skittish and flighty. I am assuming it is because she has dropped her feathers and feels vulnerable? Anyone else notice this kind of change?
Hi,
I just went out to close the coop door and I noticed that my NN looked "husky". Just where her naked neck ends and her feathers start on her chest, is a stretched sack about the size of a small orange! It is a bit squishy. I do not think it was there yesterday. The neighbor girl came by...
I'm wondering about treating PTSD (post hawk attack) with homeopathy. Anyone ever done this? She is now afraid of the other hens, afraid to be out of her coop. ( Molting too - with the usual pale comb and not laying.) She was not like this before the attack (Dec.2).
Thanks!
Hi
My SLW got attacked by a hawk about 3 weeks ago. The gash is healed from that, BUT it coincided with or brought on her first molt. She was in her own small coop for the first 10 days while she recooperated. But she clearly wanted to be in the big run and the big coop with the other 3 girls...
The hawk attacked just now. My SLW has a gash on the back of her neck and one eye is shut and a puncture under her right wing. I brought her in, flushed the eye with saline. Peroxide and ABX ointment in the gash. Just got some spray in wound care stuff and I krazy glued most of the gash...
Like so many of you, I have the 4 girls free ranging in the backyard. They have tree cover, etc. But I have scared off red tails and sharp shins lately and I want to know, am I just on borrowed time? Once the hawk knows they are there, will he persist until he gets them?
Thanks
I just noticed that my BO pullet (low girl on the totem pole) has a slightly swollen upper eyelid. I'll watch it for a few days but I'm wondering if it could be a bee sting? Did she get pecked?
thanks.
My 4 month old, black NN Is getting white tipped feathers scattered here and there on her body. Almost like a few scattered "grey hairs". Is it the food? Is she not getting enough of some nutrients? Or is her body chemistry changing now that she is about to (hopefully) start laying. I have...
My 4 mixed pullets are almost 4 mos old. They are very very sociable. I like to eat my lunch or breakfast in the garden and they gather around. I'll toss the scraps. Sometimes the two bossier ones will peck at my shoes or knees, but they don't hurt me. Is this bad chicken manners???? It...
Hi ! I just got my first 4 chickens ever. Mixed flock. 3.5 mos old. Very friendly. Previous owner let them free range. How long should I keep them "cooped up" in their new digs before I trust them to range around my place?
Thanks!

Santa brought me this coop. It holds 3 - 4 hens. Does anyone else have this coop already? I have a few questions. How does this coop work through a New England winter? Do the hens have to get out? The...
We are overrun with ticks. I love the way the guineas look. I think I'd like maybe 5. Tell me the truth, are they really noisy? Or only when raising the alarm? Do males "crow" the way a roo does? What would be a good book to get me started?
Hi - has anyone used Chinese Medicine (herbs, acupuncture) to treat their flock? Can't imagine doing acupuncture on a chicken, but the horses and the dogs don't mind a bit....
Hi - I hear I should use medicated feed for preventing coccidiosis. This may be a dumb question, but if I use medicated feed are the eggs not organic? What are the pros and cons? Thanks for helping me out on this.
I just found out my town is OK with roos. They have to be "in the dark" until 7am. 8 am on weekends. hahah. Anyway, should I just start with hens. Do I need a rooster? I have to admit, I like 'em. Since, I am new to this I welcome your opinions! Thx.
I just got the regulations from the town where I want to have a small flock (9). I have to notify abutters (5) by certified mail and appear at a Board of Health meeting and supply all sorts of paper work and a fee (annual). Should I be a good citizen or just do it without the permit? Our lots...
Hi, all! I am really enjoying this forum. Planning on about 9 hens to start. I've settled on a totally mixed flock - Australorp, Wyandotte, and EE. (I first thought maybe just 6 ladies, then my plans got bigger....) Also, I just finished reading a quick book "My Fine Feathered Friends" by...
Any problem having a small flock (6 or 8) with say, 3 Wyandottes and 3 Brahamas? Do they mix well? I wanted to let husband and son choose "their own" breed.
