    1st winter with chickens---need help

When it gets cold this winter, i'm afraid my water will freeze everyday. The coop has no electric, and I don't want to run a chord across the yard for a heat source. I have a 3 gallon waterer that usually lasts for a couple of weeks. Are there any options, other than giving them fresh water...

    I finally got an egg!!!

It took them 8 days to adjust from the move, but I had an egg this morning. It is so small and perfect. I will need 6 to make an omelet, so I hope they really kick it into gear. I'm so proud.

    How long will it take

I got my chickens about a week ago, and they are not laying. The guy I bought them off of had them in a small cage, just enough room to turn around. Although my coop and run are kinda small, it is like a mansion to them. The first night they slept on the floor, the second night on the lower...

    New chickens aren't laying

I bought two Buff Cochin Bantams two days ago and they haven't laid an egg yet. They are a little over a year old, and the guy that I bought them off of showed me their eggs that they laid that day. So I know they are, or at least were laying. I understand that they might be stressed from the...

Are all hatcheries (backed up) this time of year?

I just found out that the chicks I ordered from Cackle won't be here till June. Would I be better off to cancel that order and find a new hatchery, or are they all backed up this time of year? If not, which one do you suggest? Thanks.

Do I need a top on my chicken run?

I am putting a run on the side of my coop made of dog kennel panels. It will be 10' x 20' x 6' tall. Will chickens fly out if their wings aren't clipped? Or will hawks pick my chickens off? Any suggestions?
