We have black roofing paper type stuff left from when our roof was redone. I was thinking if I stapled it to the side of the coop it might heat it up during the day and reduce drafts both during the day and at night. Thoughts? I'm just thinking this will more weather proof it and warm it, but by...
I'm including several images. This all happened in the last few days.
One of them also seems to have an eye issue?
They are all less than 2 months old.
I'm so excited! We had chicks that have been inside a couple of months and I thought they were finally old enough to go outside... well temp dropped again so I debated bringing them in but they seem to be doing fine!
Anyway I just made a new blog post on it and added it to my siggie and...
I have to admit I'm going a little crazy here. Last year hubby and I bought a house where we are now. We disagreed, he has never lived in the country, so was really nervous of septic systems. We wound up buying a outdated house that is in a subdivision in the country on 1/3 of an acre. We can...
This is the funniest thing to me. We have silkies and I gave their eggs to a man to incubate with the agreement than I got 1/4 of the hatched chicks with a minimum of 2 (as long as 4 hatched). We also had some seabright chicks that were older (around 2 months) and he wanted them so we traded out...
I'm trying to find alternatives for my chickens to just the scratch. I'm experimenting with Fermenting foods and think I'll sprout again (forgot the name for that) but I ran across duckweed. It is supposed to be high protein and with winter coming it might help since most greens won't be...
Well its that time, that dreadful time when everything is sold out til next year. So getting desperate I went with a joe shmo backyard farmer to get some "silkies". They were crosses. She offered to exchange them but at this point knowing how she keeps her flock I'm thinking I might just sell...
I'll try to post a picture later but its TINY! Its from my little white silkie hen! I'm SOO excited!
I caught my roo trying to mate her the other day too..
I think the one pictured above the last picture is a chocolate wyandotte. I'm not sure on the other two and in the bottom picture the black on the you can see his whole back was sold to me as a silkie (they are all supposed to be purebreed silkies) but his feathering seems off!! She said he...
I just have to rant because I'm pretty upset! I made an order with Ideal poultry a week ago for some chicks I was ordering 8 bantams... I just got a call today and I was super excited because I though hey since I only ordered 8 and its in a 3/3/2 set maybe they had extras hatch and they are...
I just got a silver speckled hamburg and was socializing with her today and noticed her nails are REALLY long. It didn't seem to be bothering her the first day we got her (saturday) but since I put hay in a nest box in for her she seems to prefer laying down and doesn't try to perch at all...
We are down a couple chickens currently. We have bantams, 1 roo and 1 hen both white silkies. With winter coming up I knew I needed more so they could stay warm in their coop so I bought a new hen at the flea market today (one near us has animal sales) but I fell in love with the silver...
So the title says it all. My duck went broody at under a year old and started hissing at us and sitting on her eggs. After 34 days we started cracking the eggs because they should have hatched and they were all rotten, some even exploded!
Its been around a month since the cracking of the eggs...
Alright, so I'm newer to chickens. I started with chicks and they still aren't laying yet. We recently cleaned out their tractor and removed the duck, which has helped keep it cleaner (removing the duck I mean). I was letting them out this morning and pet one then noticed a bunch of tiny worm...
Well this is my first time with ducks and my 10 month old Welsh Harlequin Hen decided to go broody on us! I don't mind other than not having fresh eggs to eat... but the wait is killing me. There is still at least two more weeks left and with egg collection it has already been 3 weeks! I'm also...
I'm really frustrated, upset, and confused. Our doe Isabella completely lost her first litter, now looking back she either didn't feed them or stomped them then began to cannabalize.... that was our FIRST ever litter.
We bought an experienced doe for our second litter. The mother had 9 live...
Well, I was going to wait til next year to get goats but we saw a great sale and I jumped the gun. I got a registered doe and her twins (a doe and a buck) all for $150, and the lady I bought her from will breed her back in a month! Oh, the twins are also registerable!
We just brought them home...
I have two ducklings and I keep worrying that one of them is walking funny, it walks around quickly and from reading the threads I know I need to find some niacin or brewers yeast for both... but I want to make sure the one doesn't have a broken, dislocated, or otherwise messed up leg.
I found what looks like a raspberry growing in my yard and noticed some sort of minty plant when I was picking weeds for my rabbits! I successfully identified it as spearmint =)
I'm pretty excited, especially since I have a brown thumb!
Have you found or discovered anything in your yard?
I know there is an OLD thread on fodder, but I just came across the idea on a blog and was wondering where ya'll get your barley, wheat, etc for fodder? The only place I've seen so far that had barley is whole foods, and its $2 a lb there. I picked up a little bit anyway just for a test run but...
