My girls have their summer home, just a basic coop with wire along the top for ventilation, sitting on top of a large covered run, so that they can go into it whenever they want, and a trap door I can close at night.
I have a poll barn that I can move the coop into if needed.
What should I do...
when are the other slackers going to start? I thought they were all the same age, 17 weeks. My 1 started two weeks ago. Is it normal for them to be so spread out?
Yesterday my neighbor, who has been farming / raising livestock since the 50's told me that if I let my chickens free range or eat grass their yolks will come out a very "unpleasant orange yellow". Thoughts?
which is not normal because mine are always locked in their run during the day. She came running across the yard to me as soon as I pulled up. I think we were both very surprised that she was loose in the yard. I still have no idea how she got out, but she was very relieved to see me and to be...
Our girls aren't laying yet, but I sometimes wonder if people become like the woman in this old movie, so tired of messing with chickens and eggs and general (although exaggerated) farm life that she never wants to see another egg again.
I have the tractor in our fenced yard. Our dogs are not aggressive with the birds, but when they are out they do a lot of whining and circle around the tractor, sniffing it and being very curious for several minutes before they get bored and wander off. My husband thinks this may freak out our...
I've read on here that chickens are very smart, curious creatures, but it still amazes me. Their little brains are the size of what? A pea? My girls have been in the coop for two weeks. Within the first few days they knew to go right up the ramp at dusk, and they come when I call them. They are...
I can't ever see the pics I really want to! I see posts saying "look at my great coop" and I think please don't be through photo bucket, and I open the post, and sure enough, can't see the pics.
Finally! Hubby is going to put two more wheels on the front so we can drag it around easier. The roof is shingled and eventually we'll add a gutter and rain barrel.
The girls seem to like it. As soon as I open the hatch in the morning they jump down into the run, without waiting for the ramp...
Would it be bad if I just fed yogurt, oatmeal, cheerios, garden vegetables, sunflower seeds, etc. I want good eggs and healthy girls, but would like to avoid buying layer pellets if possible.
I have seen pneumatic tires at a few places, both with and without metal bracket things. The ones with the brackets are significantly more expensive. Can the wheels just be attached with bolts or something? What did you do?
I was really naive about this whole coop thing. I always drive by my neighbors and see about 30 chickens free ranging. I figured we would have a simple coop for my girls to roost in at night and a covered run so I wouldn't have to worry about them during the day. I'm too paranoid and attached to...
So I went home and shared my new knowledge for the day with my hubby. I told him he needed to frame in the chicken wire for the ventilation between the coop and the roof, so that raccoons couldn't warp it and get into the coop. Now we are both confused, because the wire was already going to be...
