This is our first year with chickens. We have 3 Wellsummer roos, 5 wellie pullets and 5 red sex link pullets. Will the red sex link hens lay darker brown eggs because of the wellie roos or does the rooster have no influence over egg color?
We have 14 chickens now that are 14 to 16 weeks old. Also we have 2 little guys that are now 2 weeks old. The chicks are in the basement in a brooder right now. When should we start introducing them to the older birds? I was thinking about putting them in a wire cage in the coop for a few...
I got a call from my wife this morning stating that all 14 of our chickens were standing on our deck staring at her through the french doors. That was the end of there free ranging.
We had said when we got them that we didn't want chicken "stuff" all over everything. They had been doing...
Hatch day is supposed to be Wendesday so last night my wife and I took the eggs out of the turner, candled them and put the in the incubator along with more water to raise the humidity. Out of the 12 wellsummer eggs and 4 pheasant eggs only 4 wellies had developed . This is our second attempt...
This is the coop that I am building for our chickens. It started life as a utility shed and I picked it up for a nice price. It is 10x10 and I put up a wall inside. The chickens get 6x10 and the other side is 4x10. There is room for storage of feed and other things and access to the nest...
Right now I have 3 wellie roosters that are about 8 weeks old. 2 of them are very dark colored with lots of blue coming in. The other is a LOT lighter in color with more of a gold color around the head and the feathers on his back have more distinct whites in them. I need to be thinking about...
My second batch of 12 Wellsummer eggs just arrived. Called home and got my son to turn on the bator. If everything is ok they will be in tonight. Should have chicks on July 15th or there abouts.
My wellsummer chicks are 7 weeks old now. Out of the 9 that hatched I have 3 roosters. Two of them are a darker color and one is much lighter. I can see different personalities developing already. I only want to keep one of them. They are just starting to want to fight a little bit so that...
The automatic pop door opener for my new coop just arrived. I can't wait to get it installed. Got the timer also so the chickens won't get outside until 8am everyday.
Will let you all know how it works.
I was down in the basement spending some quality time with my wellie chicks and noticed that one of them had very running poop. It had a little spot of hard black stuff stuck to its butt. I picked that off very easily but don't know if the runny poop is something to be concerned about or not.
Just a couple of pics of the chics I got at TSC for 3/$1 a couple weeks ago out in the temporary run outside the new coop. They wellies wont join them for a couple weeks yet. We think the are golden comets.
After the big hatch was over this weekend I went out to the coop to see the 6 pullets that I got from TSC 2 weeks ago. They were probably 2 weeks old when I bought them. Their wings are fully feathered and they are starting to get some feathers around their necks and heads. Are they still to...
We now have 10 out of 15 eggs hatched. Two of the last 3 to hatch have not dried all fluffy like the rest. Thier fuzz is all pasted down and stuck tightly to their bodies. Should we wash them off? What would cause this? The humidity has remainded pretty stable throughout.
I saw an automatic roof vent opener for a greenhouse. It opens when the temp reaches something around 70 degrees then closes when it falls. Anyone have any experience with these. I was thinking about putting an awning style vent in the side of the coop and hooking it to this.
Well the end is almost here. My eggs come out of the turner tonight. I am noticing a change in the bator the last couple days. I have had to turn the heat down just a touch and have had to ad water each day for the last couple days. Will fill up both water troughs in the hovabator tonight...
My eggs are due to come out of the turner tomorrow evening. I need advice as whether to use the egg carton method or just lay them on the wire in the hovabator?
The nesting boxes in my new coop are about 20 inches from the floor. If at some point I want to let some of the hens hatch eggs do I need to have boxes on the floor. If not what do you do to allow the chicks to get in and out of the nest?
not sure if this should be here or coops
