Can anyone tell me about converting an old car into a coop?

We have an old Ford Taurus that we are thinking about converting into a coop. What should we know about converting an old car into a coop? I am a little concerned about it looking junky... but maybe that shouldn't be a big concern b/c we already have four chicken tractors in one of our...

bleeding toe on silkie chick update:self mutilation

I have a silkie chick that hatched early, so it is alone in the brooder at the moment. I have paper towels down with a few wood shavings on top & there is no wire bottom. I went down to check on it this morning & saw little reddish brown spots all over the paper towel. One of the toes is...

    Will free ranging guineas ...

that are mostly full grown "look for home" if I were to purchase them & put them free-ranging on our farm? They were hatched at the beginning of August. Is there anything special I need to know about keeping them vs. my chickens/duck/quail? I am really wanting them as watch dogs (hawks...

Selling my eggs... a couple of questions

Do you sell your duck eggs by the dozen, or does anyone sell a "pound cake pack" (5 eggs)? How much do you sell your duck eggs for? I sell my chicken eggs for $3/dozen. BTW... all of my family is in love with my duck egg pound cakes. The duck eggs have made the pound cake better than my...

    rooster flogged son

We have 2 free ranging roosters & one of them ran up to my 3 year old son today like he usually does (we hatched him & brooded him in the living room this spring... he is really tame) but then flogged him. My son stood his ground & kept facing him. I could tell he was scared, but told him to...

    dog lot type tractor question

Our first tractor that my DH built has a very sturdy coop & I am not worried about the colder weather. Our other two tractors are large and more like a dog lot on wheels. They were the design suggested by our local ag agent & he said to wrap them in plastic as a wind break this winter, but...

    rooster attacked my favorite hen

I have removed the rooster because I was so mad, but I am thinking about putting him back in the coop and putting the injured hen in my sick coop.... My EE rooster has always been very calm/wimpy. He has never mated with one of the hens (most friendly & my favorite) who is a Delaware. Her...

non-slip shelf liner in the incubator

I can't remember where I read this suggestion, but after some problems with splay leg last hatch I did some research. This time I put in non-slip shelf liner down when I took them out of the turner & it was a GREAT idea! I just wanted to share it for those who weren't aware.

solar light for supplemental light for laying

Anyone use a solar flood light? I thought this might work well for our tractors since we move them daily. How do I know if they are bright enough?

    laying in a nesting box

I have a mallard/runner mix duck in with one of my chicken tractors. I have noticed her in the nesting box the last few days and today we had a HUGE greenish tinted egg in the nesting box. Do ducks ever lay in a nesting box? I know I have read to expect them to just lay eggs wherever. Thanks!

Do you think a rabbit/hamster water bottle would work for quail?

I got some really nice regular bird cages at a yard sale yesterday for a quarter a piece. I would have to take the whole top off to put in a mason jar waterer & wondered if I could use my old hamster or old rabbit waterer with my quail. TIA:)

Your favorite place to buy clear egg cartons

I am really starting to sell some eggs:) I would like to get some clear plastic ones in quail size and chicken size. Also, does anyone know if duck eggs will fit in a standard chicken carton? I have a duck getting ready to lay. (can't wait to try those eggs in a pound cake!) Thanks for the...

One of my chicks is deformed

I hatched some cochins and BCMs that I got locally. One of the BCMs hatched over a day late, but I heard it peeping & working before that. I know now why it took longer..' It is very crossbeaked and has one eye. The other side of his face doesn't even have an eye socket... it is smooth. I...

    Fair pricing of eggs/birds

I have several people buying my quail eggs now. I am selling the eggs for $3/dozen or $10 for a week's worth (I got 2 short of 5 dozen for a guy today). Is this a good price? Too high? Too low? What do you sell yours for? Thanks

Can you hear your chickens inside your house?

I almost wonder how neighbors could complain We have 4 mature crowing roosters and many hens and I can only hear them if I am outside. Our next door neighbors *sometimes* can hear them if they are outside. Will the roosters just get louder over time or are we lucky? I like to hear them

Chick starter w/ oyster shell vs. layena

I have on several occasions, when our layena was getting low, put chick starter with oyster shell in with my coturnix. The days they have that I get many more eggs... often half of the hens will lay two a day the day after getting it. Is this because of the higher protein? Anyone else have...

    frizzled quail?

I have a chick that is feathering out a bit with white feathers that look very much like my frizzle chickens did when they started to feather out. Are there frizzle quail? This is the only one with splay leg & it keeps pulling off the bandaids.
