Ordered 4 baby chicks- got 5!

I ordered 4 chicks from a hatchery and they sent me 5. We were excited- but the first day we had a baby chick drown in the waterer. So we are back down to 4. We ordered 2 Salmon Faverolles and 2 Americanas. Sadly, it was one of the Faverolles we lost. So could you tell us what our BOGO chick...

    Calling all grammar nazis

Or people who just want to help out :D I just posted my webpage. It's meant for my small local community/village. I am not tell anyone about it until all the kinks have been worked out. I was hoping for some test webpage surfers to find those kinks! Could you scour the page and let me know...

    Winterizing Run

I have enclosed the run with thick plastic and I am going to the tarp up later over the roof: None of it is "airtight" and it's not meant to keep out the cold, just the "wet". My concern is my roosters sanity. He is rather upset that he can't see outside anymore. Will he get over it? or...

    Jaundice bird?

I culled my two cockerels this past weekend. They were the exact same age and breed (Easter Egger mutts). One of them had kidneys the size of the grains they ate (compared to the other which was a normal pea size) and had a sack of fluid (thin and clear) around his heart. After plucking, his...

    First hen singing egg songs

This has probably been asked a million times, but I didn't find anything myself. One of my silkies "presented" herself to the rooster (which he ignored!!! The fool...) so I thought, hm, I bet this means she is close to laying! (The 2 silkies are a week older then the rest of the girlies)...

    A few weeks older...

Last thread I posted my mutts and the consensus was I had two boys. Still no crowing- but I'm 100% positive on one of them. Still up in the air about the other. Could I get a few opinions now, a few weeks later? :) Pudding- on the left- I'm sure is a boy. Custard, on the right, I'm torn...

This is Custard: and this is Pudding: Any help on breed and gender would be great! I have no clue how old they are and I'd love to do some research on them. Thanks in advance!

    Terramycin WITH Tylan 50?

I've been treating sneezy/congested/hoarse sounding chickens for the past week with Terramycin in their water. I think they get better, then I think they slide back and it's been a guessing game all week as to whether or not it's working. The package said to give for 7-14 days (7 days will be...

are my chickens going to die?

3 days ago I noticed one of my girls sneezing. 2 days ago she sounded slightly congested. Yesterday I notice other sneezing. Today they were all congested and gurgly when they breath. I put antibiotics in their water. Are they going to die? :( no discharge from eyes or nose.

    sneezing and congested sounded chicken

I noticed little mites or lice around the vent of one of my girls, so the whole flock got rubbed down with (food grade) diatomaceous earth. Today (a day after the "bath") I noticed one of my girls (10 weeks old) was sneezing and sounded congested (wheezing maybe?) that I could hear when I held...

Which rooster should I keep (part 2)

I originally posted a post similar to this two weeks ago after realizing I had 2 roosters. I ended up keeping Steve and rehoming Phil. Well here I am again, with ANOTHER surprise rooster. My Barred Old English Bantam crowed today. I could have cried. Here we go again. So, BYC friends, I'm...

Old English Bantam ***UPDATE*** Please help me decide :)

My Old English Bantam has been behaving a little like my rooster. I'm curious if you guys could help me figure it out. From a hatchery, SUPPOSED to be a lady, hatched June 3rd The little one on the right, next to the Barred Rock: Her face a little closer:

    New chick old chicks

We have 9 chicks- 8 weeks-10 weeks old (including 1 rooster, Steve). Today we brought home two 4 week old chicks. We have them together, yet separate but having them in a smaller pen in the run and we screened off a section of the coop just for them too. How long should I do this segregation...

    Which rooster should I keep?

Help me decide by 5 (EST) today! I have 2 (accidental) roosters. They are 9-10 weeks old (red star sex links). There are 8 hens (2 silkies, 3 bantams and 2 comets all 8-9 weeks old) The bigger rooster has started (trying) to crow, about 3 days ago. It's cute. The other one has not. The one...

    First night in the coop

I'm sitting here wondering about my girls (and accidental boys heehee). It's their first night out of the brooder box in the garage under a lamp and into their coop in the dark backyard. I'm sure they are doing better then me.

I have 2 roosters- by accident

So 2 of my "hens" are roosters. I'm sad about it because they were such great baby chicks, got used to me and were 2 of my favorites. They are 4 weeks old- just about 5 weeks now. It's a small backyard flock, 10 birds total. I think I already know the answer about having 2 roosters, but I'm...

1 month silkie and 2-3 week chicks?

I finally hunted down a silkie (always wanted one!) It's a 1 month old female and I'm picking her up Wednesday. Will she be ok mixing with my 2 and 3 week old chicks? (Brahma bantams, red stars, etc.) Any tips? Suggestions?
