For about a week whenever we go to lock the chickens up at night our rooster Elmer a black australorp is in the nesting box instead of on the roost. Any idea why he is doing this? He is almost a year and a half old and has never done this before.
While cleaning out my coop I came across this (pic below) it looks like a long worm in it too but we have treated them for worms with the stuff you put in their food. I don't know if the slimy stuff is shell less egg or mucus and the red stuff, not sure if it's blood or intestine. What do you...
I have a hen that just started today acting very tired, standing with her eyes closed and stands with her feathers puffed out and isn't eating or drinking much. I held her on my lap and she just laid there with her eyes closed. Anyone have any idea what may be wrong? There isn't any other signs...
My son lives 2 hrs from me and I have chickens and he keeps a garden, they want my chicken poop. I need to know how to save it for them? We normally add lime to keep the smell down but I don't know if that is ok to go into their compost. First I tried to save it in a plastic bucket with a lid...
If I want to let my broody hatch some eggs what are good eggs to use? From hens that have been laying over a year or can you use eggs from hens that are are 7 months to 11 months old?
This LB is 14 weeks old and was suppose to be a hen, I got it when it was 6 weeks old. The pic of it with the Dominickers by it, they are 3 weeks older and the columbian wyandott by it is the same age it is.
I got 8 chicks on 5-4-2015 and today I found a poop that didn't look right to me I don't know which chick did it. They are 5 through 9 weeks. Here is a pic. What do you think?
I just got a 9 week old Dominique chick and didn't notice until I got her home that her middle toe is either deformed or has been broken at some point , it points inward toward the other foot and can overlap the other foot when standing. Do you think this will be a problem as she grows for...
I have a rir rooster that is by himself because he fights with my other rooster so I am wondering how many hens would you suggest to keep him company? The area is only able to hold about 4 birds without being over crowded. Could I keep 2 hens without him driving them crazy?
We put our big hens with the 8 week old chicks and keep them seperated but could see each other and supervised visits during each day. 2 of the big hens did not like the chicks and bullied, but 1 which is head hen was down right mean, holding done and pulling out feathers and eating them! I...
We moved our 3 laying hens into the big coop where my momma hen is with her 8 week old chicks on Saturday. Keeping them seperated but able to see each other and putting them together for short visits while supervised and have them roost together at night and then seperated next morning just...
My chicks are almost 8 weeks and I am trying to get them intergrated with my 3 other hens before winter. I have them where they can see each other and I go out a few times a day and let them together and guard them but the big hens want to kill the chicks and mamaw! how long does it take on...
How do you keep the chicks from eating the laying hens food? It's not good for them to eat because of the oyster shells right? My chicks are 7 1/2 weeks old.
My chicks are now 6 weeks old and in the coop with mamma, they roost at night but it is going to be in the 20's in a couple of nights so I'm wondering if I should use a heat lamp when it get's that cold out at night or are they old enough to be ok?
We have feed medicated chick starter from the start, they are now 5 weeks old and my husband wants to change over to non-medicated now so when they go to the next stage of feed what is left over can be feed to the rest of the hens and not be wasted. Is it ok to change? Have they been on it long...
My chicks are a month old and the 2 that I believe are roosters are acting like they want to fight, is this how young rooster act?
Top 2 pics I think are rooster, the bottom pics I believe are hens.
They only do this with each other. The other 2 I believe are hens and they don't fight.
My chicks are 4 weeks old, can you tell by looking what sex they are? I have 4, 2 are RIR and 2 are Black Australorps, they may be mixed I'm not sure.I think this is a hen
