Hey everyone! I haven't been on here years! The virus is giving me a few months of free time so I'm gardening again and also raising two ducks. Perkins this time. They're 8 weeks old. Last time it was about a dozen Rouens.
I'm having a new issue. Started recently. They sleep in my greenhouse...
I spent a lot of time with my ducks until recently. My schedule gets me out the door at sunrise and I'm not back for at least 12 hours.
I heard they've developed the bad habit of swimming in the pool instead of Lake. Usually I come home and they're in bed (greenhouse) and I close the door...
One duck has a twitch like it's about to eat something from the ground. Today I noticed two.
I'm spending a lot less time with the the next few weeks. Anything?
Does anyone else involve ducks in their taxes? I haven't been around much in part because it's tax season and that's my job, but I'm planning to make my pets a little profitable and tax deductible. Anyone else?
Went out of town, had a "sitter" - now they know and love the pool.
A tarp is too much $. I'm thinking balloons filled with water and air might scare them floating. Any other ideas?
I did it when they were little and cute experience but wasn't practical. Still guessing it's not for 12 ducks but keeping my options open. How many times a day do they have to be changed? I'd like to bring them in sometimes.
One of my ducks had a hump on it's back since hatching. A few weeks ago I noticed it was causing wing development issues. Looked similar to Angel Wing I believe.
I took the duck to a wild life rescue to check out. They felt around, said they'd never seen anything like it, but it was just made...
Hey guys,
I've been updating and posting less than planned. I'm still bummed about the disappearance of duck #13 about four weeks ago..
Ducks can naturally be wild, but a lot of humans domesticate them. Some owners allow them to free range. I wanted to 'teach' mine to free range. In my mind...
All over youtube I've seen ducks trained in similar ways to other pets. I'm really good at training animals (mammals) and kids lol. But not really to do tricks. More Dog Whisper style.
I'm having no luck with the ducks though. I haven't tried real hard to be fair. And I've 'trained' them to...
The ducks have clocked a lot of alone time at this point, at least 100 hours. A lot more partially supervised time. And even more fully supervised outdoor hours.
It's been almost exactly 24 hours now with one less duck. I have no idea what happened. I've been looking everywhere. I *was* with...
I saw a simple one on YouTube to lift and lower the door on a timer. I have a sliding glass door for the ducks tho..
When are ideal open/close times? I was thinking sunrise&set but now I'm thinking 30 mins after it's completely dark to make no one gets locked out.
An automatic timer feeder...
I know they're non-flight birds but I'm pretty sure that means they're really bad at it, can't go in the air, and stay close to the ground for short distances that take a lot of work.
I noticed one of mine is developing wings below the range of the others. I think it was the runt. The wings...
These pics are all from virtually the same area just different angles. The spookiest area (pic 1) is where I've never seen anything. The big sunny safe looking area (pic 3&4) I see action sometimes. Where would you focus on swimming?
I literally just turned 90 degrees and then took pic 2...
I'm on a roll w posts today. I noticed my ducks stopped eating ants a week or two ago. I'm not sure if they're not interest because there's better things to eat or because now they're bigger and its just not worth it to them.
They definitely aren't afraid of them. They'll just chill on an ant...
I can't find the tread where someone was asking for help last month.. Hope you see this :)
I didn't understand the problem until using a much large water distributor. The drinking water gets dirty and back washes into the reservoir. It can happen quick, then all water stays dirty.
Mine also...
Does this breed exist? They both seem like beautiful and popular breeds. Many named 'hybrid' breed variations exist, especially w Perkins.
It doesn't seem there are any named breeds variations of these two look alike tho.
I have seen threads showing cross breeds, but they suggest it's not...
Hey guys,
I've noticed this this might be a controversial subject. It seems the majority of BYC (and google) feel it's cruel to release a domesticated duck into the wild. A small minority, including myself, don't believe it *has* to be. What I'm doing may, or may not, be viewed in that way...
