I am thinking about getting more chickens - no younger than pullets. Do I need to do anything to introduce them to my current group? I only have 3, all buff orpingtons and all hens. I would like to actually get the same breed.
I have three Buff Orpington hens - they are about 24 weeks old (I bought them around Mothers Day when they were 8 weeks). but no eggs yet. I thought I read that hens start laying by now. Thanks
I am pretty sure this has been asked before but how old are hens when they start laying normally? Just curious to when we should start expecting eggs. We have Buff Orpingtons.
Hi
I'm back. Used to post here a couple of years ago. When we lost our flock, I stopped coming by. We just now decided to get new chickens So now I've got 5 buff orpingtons that I think are wonderful. They like to perch on me. which is nice sometimes but not when I'm doing their food...
We got chickens again (we lost our last flock or whatever a group of chickens is called). I cleaned out the old shavings and put new shavings in there. but not sure if I need to put more bedding down. right now, except when I put them in our dog yard (sans the dogs of course), they stay in...
So I guess I need to get DH to put some type of mesh material up under the roof (the triangle part between the roof and the walls - don't know what its called). cause one of my darn roosters keeps getting out and that is the only open part (when the door is closed).
lost my silkie hen today. I don't know what got her - didn't find a body just counted 3 chickens (supposed to have 4) when I locked up today. We checked their normal haunts but she wasn't there. So now I have more roos then hens.
southernsibe is going to give me more hens. need to decide...
it seems that my hens like to take about 2 week vacations from laying. they stopped laying a few weeks ago and just started laying again last week. silly birds.
and buy some eggs as my two haven't laid an egg in a long time (one since thanksgiving, the other in about a week). wouldn't have been a bigg deal except I promised my oldest girl we'd make cupcakes.
do hens not lay in the winter?
my silkie hen (shes about 7 months) hasn't layed an egg since Thanksgiving. She seems broody. It has been on the cold side since then.
should I be worried? I have been getting brahma eggs
thanks
I'm not sure if my light brahma is laying yet or not. she's about 6.5 months old. I also have a silkie hen who is laying. What color are the brahma eggs? How big are they at her age right now?
thanks!!
And I think she's primarily laying in the coop (which I still need to get pics of - should do it now while everybody is asleep). How often do they lay eggs?
Also, do all hens lay eggs? I don't think my brahma hen is laying yet (she and the silkie who is laying are the same age)
my (ok, the chickens') coop is ready for inhabitants. It just needs a few minor touches but nothing that won't prevent Bobthebuilder, Wendy, Bojangles, and Cassie from moving in.
I was wondering if anybody knows of a horse forum like this one? southernsibe is trying to find one that will be able to help her with questions she might have.
thanks
I missed my first egg!! As I was switching around cars this morning (I took my husband's truck in), I noticed 3 of our 4 birds hanging around the driveway and by this wooden crate (I can't remember what its called but the things that places put merchandise on and lift with a forklift) but under...
my two roos are crowing now. Bobthebuilder (brahma) now has a whole crow - he used to sound like he was getting cut off. Silkie roo went from not crowing to crowing in what seemed like overnight.
I witnessed my first chicken mating - unintentionally. was bringing in groceries and the...
so, now that my coop is almost complete - just the nesting box, perches, and a few miscellaneous things (like the triangle under the roof) are still needed. What should I put on top of the floor? its plywood - but not directly on the ground.
can't wait, don't really have any new pics -...
