    Her comb isn't bright red!

I tried to do a search on this, but I never know what to ask the search engine to get an answer. So here goes. One of my hens has a comb that's not bright red.............like all the others. It's more a pale pink. She's not a real active participant in the flock and prefers to be the one on...

    "Wrinkled" yolks

I broke open some eggs for breakfast today and the yolks were wrinkled, or sort of saggy. What causes that?

    Before, during, or after?

I'm new to chickens. My first batch of hens are now 10 months old. Laying eggs like crazy (average a doz a day for 14 hens) and I'm loven' being around them...............or is it having them around me? But I've a question about cackling! I love to hear them cackle. Does a hen cackle to...

    Question about oyster shell

My hens are now 9 months old. I've 14 hens and since they started laying in December, they consistently produce an average of 1 doz eggs per day. When they first started laying, I (a "store egg" kinda guy) was surprised at how hard the shells were. Strong and thick...........so much so it...

    Blood spots

I'm new to this chicken farmin' thing. My 14 hens are dutifully providing me with a minimum of a dozen eggs a day. My girlfriend and I are in this together, and she's been selling them at work. One of her customers complained she'd had an egg with a blood spot that looked to be about a...

"Outside" layer..........unappreciative of her "lovely" nest!

I obviously have one hen who sometimes lays an egg outside. The hens have been laying for about 6 weeks now. I've got 6 nesting boxes for the 14 hens.....which ought to satisfy the most picky of girl chickies, but not this one. Don't have any idea which one it is. I just go out and there...

    Lots of eggs

When I got my chicks last June, I was told to expect approximately 4 eggs per hen per week. I have 14 hens. That figures out to 7.98 eggs a day. My hens are laying between 10 and 12 eggs a day.............and occasionally double-yoke eggs! Have I miss-figured, or are my hens working their...

Eggs..........to wash or not to wash?

The title pretty much says it all. My eggs have little brown spots and swirls, etc. on the shells. Is it okay to wash off this residue?

    Wing Clipping

I'm fairly certain the topic of wing clipping isn't a new one..............but it is to me. Our chickens are 19 weeks old...............and clearing the fence around their coop and run as if it weren't even there! I know there are ways to totally enclose their pen, but I'm really getting tired...

    Aviary Netting

After much head and chin scratchin', I've decided about the only way I'm gonna "keep 'em down on the farm" is to install an aviary netting over the entire top of my chicken pen. I've given up thinking I can keep the population count up and let them free range. (too many predators out here in...

Please don't tell me to "do a search" because I have!

I know, I know, "Do a Search". But I have and have read until I'm blue in the face and can't find an answer. I've opened up the nesting boxes to my 17 week old hens. Figure they are getting close to laying and wanted them to check them out. Dutifully loaded them with fresh...

Okay, can someone please tell me what "brand" he is?

I bought 25 chicks back in June. Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, and Black Stars. Along with them came an extra....a Roo......the one in this picture. I've asked every one I know who lives nearby what "brand" he is, but everyone is at a loss. Thought I'd give you folks a shot at it. I'll...

    Turned them out!

My chicks are now 11 weeks old. I opened the run gate at 10 weeks and let them go. Pardon the pun but I was like an old mother hen about it. Was just sure they wouldn't "come home" at the end of the day. But, instead, they parade home off and on all day long, and free range as far (so far)...

    Probios

I often put dispersible powder ProBios in my llamas feed when they don't seem to be feeling well. It says on the container it can also be fed to birds.............I'd assume chickens would fit into that category. Does anyone on the forum use this with their chickens?

Probably not a new topic to many, but it is to me.

I've got some 8 week old chickens. All have been looking extremely healthy as they've grown. Found one this morning that was huddled in the corner of the coop and wouldn't come out with the others. She has a "tube" coming out of her rectum. Is this a worm? If so, is it too late to save her?

When to "kick them out of the house"?

My "girls" are coming up on their 6 week birthday. They have their nice new coop and what I consider a nice sized run to play in during the day. It isn't crowded yet. But as they grow larger it will become more crowded. I plan on free ranging these "girls", but live in the woods with a lot...

    Electrolytes..........how long?

My chicks are just 5 weeks old now and the electrolytes I bought at the same time as the chicks is only going to last another week or less. I was told to use this until it ran out. It is extremely hot here in Oklahoma right now and I know how important electrolytes are for humans. Should I...

My chicks are 4 weeks old today

Okay. This is silly, but then I'm new to all of this. So bear with me. Today is my chicks 4 week birthday. I opened the coop door this morning and they were intrepid, but ventured down the ladder...........well, at least some of them did. They've not all been down yet...........nor have...

Is it time to move my chicks?

This is my first batch of chickens. (I'm a converted "city boy".) I went out to take care of the "girls" for the evening in their brooder. They are 3 weeks old today. There water-er was turned over...........as was their feeder. They were chirping up a storm and fighting each other. There...

    Gruel

Part of the "Heinz 57" makeup of my ancestry is Scottish..............and I've been accused of being able to rub two pennies together in my pocket until they start a fire! So each morning and evening when I feed and water my 3 week old chicks, it breaks my heart to throw away the mixture of...
