    Maran Eggs: White coating normal?

    First maran egg this morning! It has a white coating that, when dipped in water, makes the egg a beautiful dark brown. I can scratch off the coating with my fingernails and reveal the brown underneath even when dry. Anyone know what this is? Thanks! Michael

    Stupid Newbie Question: When can they move outside?

    Hi all. I have my first baby chicks after always buying laying age pullets. I get the whole 5 degrees less each week thing. My question is: when is it OK to let them live outside in a run/unheated henhouse? I live in San Diego, so it's never below 50s. THANKS! Michael
