This is my second time incubating but first time with a darker eggs (Welsummer) and shipped eggs.
4/5 shipped eggs I can tell are developing well and we saw movement today. Some have slight saddle air cells but nothing too crazy. It is Day 13.
The 5th one I just can't tell what's going on...
I posted yesterday on the emergency/illness forum thinking that there might be something wrong with my 6 month old Buff O. I was shocked to hear that her puffing up and being more vocal (but acting normally otherwise) may be a sign of her going broody.
Having looked at some photos and videos...
In the past 2 days, I've noticed that my 6 month old Buff Orpington has been puffing out her feathers a lot. Mostly the ones on the back of her neck, but occasionally she'll puff herself up completely and shake, similar to what I call the "offended shake" that they do after my kids pick them up...
We have 3 hens who are now 20 weeks old. The combs and wattles are nice and red and all have been doing the "submissive squat" for about a week to a week and a half. So of course we are getting excited about our first eggs!
We normally let them out of the coop/run after they've eaten in the...
I went out this evening to check that the chickens were up on the roost in the coop and not in a pile on the floor (they're 3 months old), and found them on their roost in the run! No idea how long they've been doing this as it's been awhile since I've been out to spy on them at night.
The run...
I'd like to add a blue egg layer to my small flock and I'm having a really difficult time deciding which is right for us. We keep chickens primarily for eggs, with the added benefit that they are teaching our kids great responsibility and connecting them to their food source. We do not keep a...
We have a very small flock (4 right now but one is looking like a rooster so very well may be 3 soon!) If our 4th girl is indeed a cockerel, we will probably add 2 new chicks at some point in the next year.
I am wondering if there is any ideal time to help ensure the most steady egg...
Summers are hot and humid in GA but we do get some cold weather in Winter and occasional snow.
I'm feeling torn about ventilation and windows in our henhouse and would love some feedback. Here's what we have going now:
- measures 3x5 (we have 3 hens) and is attached to a covered run that they...
Our chicks free range in the backyard for 1-4 hours a day (usually 2-3) depending on how much time we can spend out there with them. Dust bathing is definitely on their agenda each time they go out.
My question is, is a once-a-day dust bath enough or should I provide them a pan in the brooder...
I've seen people using pretty varied materials in their chicken run and I'd love to hear why you love what you use - or hate it ;)
We are building "The Garden Coop" on an area that right now is mulch over weed barrier with some plantings. So ripping that out and then we'll have bare dirt...
We were at a friend's house today and they had a 2 week old Guinea that was sick. It could not walk, legs kept slipping out from under it and going off to the side. Of course my son and friend's daughter had a sick ward set up before I even knew what was going on, clearing its' pasty butt and...
I know there are a lot of coop photos easily findable in this forum, but I'd love to see pics of henhouse interiors in particular.
We are building "The Garden Coop" - plans are great but there isn't a ton of guidance on henhouse setup i.e. placement of roosts, poop boards etc in relation to...
Last night I had a week old chick acting very lethargic. She also had a watery, foamy poop. She was also not eating or drinking, although she had been eating a few hours prior in the yard. I was pretty convinced it was cocci but did not have any corid, so I made a solution of ACV and pure maple...
My one week old chick has been very lethargic for the last couple hours. She seemed fine 4 hours ago, I noticed she was sleepy around 2 hours ago and when I checked her just now she seems very sleepy. No other symptoms. She is not on medicated feed and I do not have corid here or nutri-drench. I...
We have three 3-week olds and one 1-week-old chick. They've been going for progressively longer field trips to the backyard when we can be out there with them, and they LOVE it. I think the bigger ones are already totally over being in the brooder.
I've been thinking about moving them outside...
We are planning to start building "The Garden Coop" for our 3-4 chickens soon (we are suspicious that one may be a roo that needs to be rehomed.) This is our first time raising baby chicks and having backyard chickens.
After reading these forums, there are a few mods that I plan to make that I...
Some of you may remember that we recently added a new chick in with our 2 week olds, so now we have 3 almost-3-week-olds and 1 almost-1-week-old in the brooder. Well, the baby BR is beating all the older chicks up! She will follow them around and jump and peck at their eyes repeatedly. They peck...
This is kind of a moot point, as we've already chosen and brought home our chicks, but is there a way to choose a chick with a good temperament from a group? I just picked the ones that seemed the most awake and active, were eating and moving around a lot, as I was nervous about getting a sick...
We have 3 2-week-old chicks, a RIR, a Buff Orpington, and what we thought was a Barred Rock but I've learned today is actually an Australorp.
I'm pretty concerned that the Australorp is also a roo (bought all sexed run chicks but since it's the wrong breed it seems likely it was put in the...
I am concerned this 2 week old barred rock is a rooster. What raised my suspicions was that this one has been much slower to feather than my other two chicks (a buff orpington and a RIR) - I did on search on why that might be and saw that often it points to a male. This would be very sad as we...
