Just wanted to update ya'll on my first hatch ever and the LG that actually delivered lol. I ordered 34 bobwhite quail eggs off Ebay- 3 of them never started developing so I was left with 31. Out of those, 28 hatched and all are doing well. I haven't done the math, but the percentage was a...
How do you guys typically go about adding size to your standard bobwhites? Do you simply only breed your biggest ones? Or would you bring in some Georgia Giants or Butlers. I'm starting with some Tenn. Reds and just looking for ideas if I want to get bigger birds (without necessarily just...
Hey, I just got me a new incubator and I am looking for some Tennessee Red hatching eggs. Found some on Ebay, but figured I'd check here too. Really don't need more than 30 or so. Thanks, Brian
I just bought me a LG and had a few questions about setting it up. All I have is the incubator (no fan, turner, or egg trays) so I was wondering if I could put a couple of chicken egg cartons in there to put the quail eggs in. If not- how do I set my eggs up in there? Also, I just fill those...
One of my coturnix hens has a badly broken wing and is limping around. Don't have a clue what happened. I'm assuming she is hurting pretty bad. Should I go ahead and eat her or is this something that will heal up? I just figure I shouldn't leave her in pain.
Thanks
Just saw a pic of one of these birds on ebay. Does anybody raise these? If so, would ya'll mind posting some pics. Been thinking about getting some bobwhites and these reds look really good.
Just wondering if any of you guys/gals on here that sell eggs/birds ever ship small numbers of chicks- like 10-20. Is it possible to ship that few or even less? If so, how much does shipping usually run?
I've got 8 brown coturnix (2 roosters) and 10 A&M's of unknown sex (will know a week or so hopefully). They are in a 15 square foot cage rabbit hutch and that is probably where they will stay for good. I'm really just using them for eggs now until I get an incubator. I want to keep some...
I am new to quail, but I have seen alot of people on here say that they can't fry quail eggs sunny side up or over easy because the yolk busts. I don't have a quail egg cutter, but I have been using a butter knife to crack the egg near the point of it. Then I just peel the top off and pour the...
I mentioned in another post that I just added 8 brown coturnix (6 hens) to the flock. Well, between 6 pm Wed. and 10 last night those six little birds have laid 10 eggs. I'm pretty impressed. I'm sure I don't have any special quail or anything lol, but that seems like a lot of eggs. I'm used...
I just added 8 browns to my flock and they are already laying. I don't have an incubator yet so I got the idea to stick some eggs under my Cuckoo Marans hen. She's ALWAYS broody (I don't know how she even survives lol). Anyways, does anybody else do this?
Just wondering what you guys are working towards as far as your quail breeding. I know people keep them for eggs and meat, but does anybody have like a certain goal or type or standard they are breeding for. Are their any developments you can make by strategically breeding certain ones. Just...
I found some 6-8 week old coturnix for $1.50 a piece, but they are losing the feathers on their backs. The seller says it is because he doesn't have a light bulb out there for them. They are being kept fairly crowded in a wire cage out in a barn- no sunlight. Otherwise they look healthy...
I just got 10 A&M quail. They are almost two weeks old and I am planning on building them a rabbit hutch-style cage. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to use some cedar boards I have lying around. I read somewhere that you don't want to use cedar shavings because of the dust, but...
Just wanted to post some updated pics of our chickens. We recently added three Magpie ducks as well. I went to get two, but the lady threw in one with a messed up leg. Everything seems lined up, no dislocations, wounds or bruising, but she/he just won't use it. Otherwise, it eats and drinks...
I am a new member to this board and new to chickens as well. Luckily, I live a block away from another board member, Mr.Roy. I started out by purchasing four Rhode Island Red eggs and making a homemade incubator out of a small styrofoam icechest (four is about all it will hold). It works...
