Rhode Island Reds? Almost look like Leghorns. Combs are pretty big. Any ideas?

Hello, I brought 2 lovely girls home yesterday, Ethel and Lucy. They look like RIR's, but not completely. The combs are very large, and they have white earlobes. Well, Ethel does. They are a good deal smaller then my RIR too. I am just curious as to what they might be. Thanks!

Calling all Marek's experts.... PICS ADDED- Ocular Mareks??

Hello, we started with our first chickens 2 and a half years ago. 46 day old chicks were delivered to us on March 2, 2010 - 10 from My Pet Chicken, 36 from McMurray, and ALL were vaccinated for Marek's. The first 'sign' was when a Speckled Sussex, Whirly Bird, had what appeared to be Wry neck...

EE prefers people to chickens...time to make her a House Chicken?

Meet Ginger! She is a 2.5 year old Easter Egger, and lives with a flock of 29 birds (28 hens, 1 roo). Ginger was one of 40+ day old chicks that arrived at our house on Feb 28, 2010. She was always a very skittish bird, and has always been one of the lowest in the pecking order. When she was...

Anyone know what breed this hen may be?

Hello, I spotted this hen near a friends house yesterday. According to the neighbors, she has been around for months, and probably escaped from the local livestock auction. Just wondering if anyone has any idea as to what her breed may be. She is a pretty little thing, and looks very healthy.

Suspect Roundworm and Gapeworm-which to treat first?

Hello, I have 41 hens who are nearly 8 months old. Their coop is lined with pine bedding, and their run was sand, but we have had some heavy rains so the run is wet and mucky. They were free ranging nights and weekends, but it is dark when we get home from work and there was a recent fox...

Will a dog help deter a fox attack? What type?

Hi, this may sound like an ignorant questions, but I have never had a dog. I like cats, guinea pigs, birds, but never was a huge dog fan. I am thinking that I may need one, because the foxes are very active lately. 1 fox decimated a neighbor's flock, and we see a second fox in the area now. I...

Hi again. I have a 22 week old Red star, Berry, who has been laying Rubber eggs and acting lethargic. She is one of 42 birds. We had been feeding them Purina Flock Raiser, but just switched to Layena, and they have a separate container of oyster shell. She also gets to free range every...

Hens "chased" raccoon off the property in daylight !!!

At about 5:30 yesterday I heard a very loud clucking coming from the yard. It was my Buff Orpington, Kitty (The Alpha)- she always gets real loud when she sees another animal. It could be a bear, duck, snake, or apparently a raccoon. By the time I got outside 2 of the Orps were walking side...

First Egg at 16 weeks !!!!!!!!!!

Hello, i will post a picture of the egg later. Isn't 16 weeks very young to start laying?? I think it came from a Red Star, (don't laugh, her name is Reddi Whip) as they look the most mature and squat when I try to pet them. I now have a SLW, BO, and BR that have begun to squat as well. They...

pullet with swollen face, no other symptoms

Good Afternoon everyone! I have a 14 week old SLW wyandotte ( from McMurray Hatchery - vaccinated for Marek's and Newcastle) with swelling on 1 side of her face. Her weight feels good - she is one of the best eaters. She is very active. She free ranges every afternoon/evening for 3 or 4...

SLW went after rabbit, then a sparrow - is this normal??

I am kind of new to chickens. The flock is now 14 weeks old. My tamest pullet, a Wyandotte named Laila, spotted a full sized rabbit in the back yard. She ran full speed at the rabbit. The rabbit ran in circles at first, maybe not thinking that the chicken was a real threat, but soon 20 more...

Hello again, I have a 2 week old EE, named Egg Drop. She is substantially smaller then the other EE's that she was shipped with. I got her from My Pet Chicken. All were the same size 2 weeks ago upon arrival. She is quite active and runs around with the 'big' chicks, but I never see her...
