    Broody hen gave up

So my hen Red gave up on her eggs at 24 days. I had just candled them and she was super close to getting at least two chicks. My best guess is she wasn't a constant sitter and would get up for longer periods of time and thus delaying the development of the chicks. I think I know the answer to...

    Is this molt?

So this girl just molted her neck feathers a month ago. None of my other birds are in molt and there's no sign of mites. I'm thinking she is being bullied. There is a slight sign of distress in her breathing when I was holding her, but nothing that sounds like respiratory problems.

1 month old chickens not returning to coop at night

Let me start by saying I've gone through this before. I am currently picking them up and putting them into their coop every night. Some nights I lock them in, others I just leave the door open. They stay inside either way. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to put an older hen in with them...

Is it too late for this chick?

This all happened in a matter of hours. I checked them around lunch time and noticed nothing. After dinner it got this bad. Bleeding has stopped and I have a way to separate her, but if its tooate I'd rather not allow her to suffer.

Unhappy with Speckled Sussex - Looking for a different breed

So I wanted to go the route of the Speckled Sussex because they are touted as a dual purpose bird. After not being able to find a good hatchery, I took a chance from multiple and sorted the best I could. Turns out I have small birds that lay small eggs. Are they beautiful? Yes, but I don't...

Which feed would you pick. Ingredient list only

Based solely on the below ingredient list, which feed would you prefer. I picked 16% proteins from both companies. FWIW, one is 53c per pound and one is 40c per pound. I can reveal that if needed, but I didn't want to put biased into the question.

    Looking for my best rooster

A quick back story. I fell in love with the history of Speckled Sussex as a dual purpose breed for the homesteader. A good laying breed that's hardy, good at foraging and friendly to boot. I always like to keep a rooster and do a sustainable flock. Well these girls go broody as well so I can...

    Speckled Sussex Question

All, So my long term goal is a dual purpose bird. Speckled Sussex is what I ended up going with, but the more I start reading the less happy I am about my choice. I'm 30 chickens deep at this point so I need to move forward. My wife would kill me if I started over. What I wanted was a bird...

Breeding for behavior - Speckled Sussex

All, I have a decent size flock of Speckled Sussex from 3 different breed stocks right now. I will be taking them from about 30 chicks down to a flock of 8 hens and a rooster. I've seen the SOP for Sussex and could always use a little coaching specifically in that area, but my main question...

Chick has strange way of holding her wings

if the picture shows properly she sort of just seems to let her wings droop. She is eating and drinking properly. She also seems to always have her feathers fluffed. This picture was taken after she was inside the house for about 20 minutes.

Would love a guess at this chick

I bought some Speckled Sussex straight run chicks and these showed mixed in. I know they're not my sussex, but curious if anyone's good enough at guessing when they're this little

Fun for me project about to start

So I'm pushing the reset button on my flock. As of Thursday I'm getting 9 Sussex (speckled) chicks. Eight are females and one is a male. I always like to try and learn something with each flock I have so one day I'll be able to just do everything in my sleep. I'm really trying for a...

    General Bumblefoot question

Do you guys find that you end up with bumblefooted chickens after dumping new mulch/straw into their run? I had a ton of left over shredded mulch after doing all my garden beds this year. So like last year, I took that left over and moved it to the run. I also had about 2 1/2 hay bales that...

    Moving Mom w/ chicks

So a short story... I finished building my 2nd coop and run about 3 weeks ago. I moved all my chickens except one broody hen. Right or wrong I didn't want to disturb her so she could be more comfortable where she set up shop. Three weeks later she is by herself with two chicks in the old run...

    Added my first rooster

So brief description of what I have currently. 12 hens that were hatched in mid August. Seven of them are currently laying. Some of the girls seem to be a little slower than others, but everyone is healthy. Coop is 4' x 8' with multiple roost levels and a nesting box attached. Run is...

What would you do to this cut?

Seems to be bleeding enough that I should do something about it

Three of my 10 week chickens wont roost

So my chicks have been out in their coop/run for about a month now. I have the same three chickens that will not go into the coop at night. Last time I had chicks, this process of going in and putting them into their coop at night only took about a week or so before they stopped. That was...

First time trying to add chicks to flock

I just brought home 12 new chicks to replace my old layers. My goal is not to kill all of the old layers until the new ones are of laying age. How would you guys go about doing this? Typical temps for September in MD can be 70s and higher during the day. October starts to cool off and then...

Getting 12 new chicks in today - it's been a while

So it's been a little bit since I've had to raise chickens from chick stage. I feel like I used to put something in their water for the first week, but I can't remember. I ordered the chicks online. I vaguely remember using Apple Cider Vinegar with the water, but I think I kept some form of...

Had to put down one, more have signs of bumblefoot

I had to put one chicken down a few days ago thanks to bumblefoot. I started checking the other chickens and noticed about half of them have the black dot. Most of their lives unfortunately were in a wet run as I just couldn't solve the water issue in that area. Over the past month or more I...
