Can you keep a small group of Freedom Rangers with layers?

If we want approximately 10 Freedom Rangers and 5 layers, can they live together for the 10 weeks the Meat Birds will take to grow? We have an unused smaller coop and large fenced area (about 300 sq ft) . Hoping I can house them together until grown, as opposed to having to construct a tractor...

    Bloody comb

Got home at dusk and went to lock coop. When I looked in the run, there was blood smeared on the side of the chicken feeder. I went into the coop to see who was hurt, and one of my chickens was up on the roost with a bloody comb which looked somewhat dried up but still a little wet. I cleaned...

    Gratitude & Happiness Thread

I am trying to stay positive and stop focusing on complaints, and have decided to make a gratitude journal to write in daily. It is so easy to ignore the things we are blessed with and focus on what we want or don’t like. Please join me in posting one thing you are thankful/grateful for each...

    Soap Making

I took a class tonight on making soap from lard & lye. I have two huge bags of pork fat in my freezer, so this was impeccable timing! They sent us home with a few bars of soap (made previously), a silicone mold, and an essential oil to give it some scent. Best clsss I’ve taken in a long time...

    Daily limp that disappears

My approx 4 month old Legbar has been sleeping in a nest box. About a week or so ago, I noticed her standing on one foot and not coming out of the coop in the morning. I examined her foot, didn’t see any noticeable bumble or any wound, so I carried her out and set her down. Immediately one of my...

    Feather management during molting

I’m just wondering what everyone does with all the feathers that accumulate during a molt? Two of my ladies have feathers EVERYWHERE the past few days. In the coop, I scoop poop every morning so I grab any large feathers I see there while scooping. There are a ton in the run also and I’m not...

Help with 11 week old gender please!

I have 3 chicks a broody hatched right around the time my all-pullet chick order came in. What are the chances they are all female? Here are the 3 barnyard mix chicks. The father is an EE roo, no idea what the mothers are. I took a body shot and head shot of each. I’ve hatched roosters before...

Post your daily egg basket collection

I love seeing the different eggs in everyone’s flocks! We chicken-sit for family and friends often, and my favorite part is collecting eggs and seeing the different colors, patterns, and sizes. I also follow the “How Many Eggs Did You Get Today” thread, and hope this one is a place people can...

How big for a chick safety area door?

I have my chicks in a separate area in the run. They sleep in a dog crate in the coop. They are 3.5 weeks old. Are they old enough to cut doors in the area they are in to let them into the whole run and separate outside fencing? If so, how big should the doors be? My smallest hen is an EE, they...

    Diseases passed through hatching eggs

There are a ton of farm stands around with eggs, some only $2 and not refrigerated. I know there are roosters in some of the pens. Hoping someone could tell me any risks of hatching eggs from an unknown farm. I only buy chicks from reputable hatcheries but would love experimenting with new eggs!

Baby chick attacked by hen (photo attached)

One of my hens is raising 3 chicks, and I thought she was doing a great job. She calls them over for food, sits on them when they are cold, and has pecked the hens that try to mess with them. They are about 2.5 weeks old. I don’t know what happened today. I heard incessant chirping, and one...

    Ideal 236

I have a friend who ordered an Ideal 236 chick, but now won’t be keeping all the chicks she ordered. She’s offered it to me. I don’t usually keep production breeds, and know nothing about this hybrid. Does anyone have one and can share their experience? I don’t have a white layer so I’m very...

    First Quail Hatch Along!

I ordered some assorted coturnix quail eggs from Meyer hatchery. A family member will be taking them once they are hatched. I set 21 eggs yesterday in my Kebonnix incubator, with 2 eggs per compartment. The pointy parts are pointed toward the outside. After a trial with the turner, keeping...

Best way to trap a fox

We have had a few chickens go missing at the farm. Pile of feathers here…few days later another. I think we have lost 5 hens in the last few weeks. Yesterday we saw it was a fox. Our flocks free range on 100 acres, and have a secure night coop. We cannot lock 50 chickens in a run, it’s just not...

    Broody hen first hatch question

My broody has successfully hatched three chicks! The first one hatched late Tuesday night. The last one hatched late yesterday. Today I removed the shells from her nest. I have her partitioned off, with about 4 feet of space and chick feed & water accessible to her & the chicks. I’ve seen the...

    What breed is this chick?

All breeds in my order are accounted for except for the Cream Legbar and the Bielefelder, both should be pullets. Here are the last two chicks: The second chick does have tiny dark eyeliner (see below). No white spot on the head. It’s like it’s missing a stripe!

    Chicken Math

So…I started with an early order to Mt Healthy around the new year (for June, but they have an early bird discount and I knew what I wanted). Since then, I have also placed an Ideal order. Started with 10 chicks from MtH and 10 from Ideal. Arriving this week, shared with some friends. We were...

    Container hanging on hardware cloth

I would like to move my oyster shell off the ground and in a hanging container of some sort, on the hardware cloth of the run. They keep knocking it over when it’s on the ground. I’ve tried putting it up on bricks too. Any ideas on what to put it in and how to attach it? Thanks!
