We bought three baby turkeys in April from our local Atwoods. Can any of you turkey experts tell me what breed they are based on how they look now, at 7 weeks? They are our first ever turkeys and what they are is a mystery to me.
I saw two of them strutting for some of the young chickens...
I just had a nice hatch out of the new Brinsea. 30 new babies, with no early or late hatchers. I ended up using a cardboard flat with the tips cut off for ventilation and just let them hatch out of it. It has been super dry here so I had to throw a sponge in for extra humidity toward the end...
I was wondering if anyone has a current price sheet from Urch/Turnland. I've been interested in chicks and/or eggs, but there isn't much online info about ordering from them.
Coturnix are definitely tough little buggers. We had over a foot of snow dumped on us, followed by another 6 inches just days later. Despite the bitter cold, the quail were out and about in the snow like they couldn't care less about it. They did take advantage of the inside of the coop and it's...
Here in OK we've dipped down into the teens a few of times at night and daytime temps have been between 20-50 degrees, but it's been pretty dry. All my quail are doing well in their outside runs. They all have access to the inside of the coop with a heat lamp inside. Some run in and out, but...
I thought I would share some of the gifts that my quail have been giving me.
Here is the tiniest egg that I have ever seen, with a chicken egg and two other quail eggs for comparison:
Here it is in the frying pan. I figured it would be all white, but it did have a tiny yolk:
Here it is...
The guy I got my first peacock from was able to catch the India Blue that he had, so I was able to go and pick him up today.
Of course, the Pied one I brought home first had to come see what was in the box.
I wasn't sure if he was going to come out of the box or not. But when I went back...
I have the opportunity to acquire one or two peacocks to add to the farm. Both are males, but I do not know their ages yet. I have been looking for info on keeping two males together or just a single male on his own, but haven't really found anything. I can provide a large, secure pen and plenty...
These little guys hatched this last weekend. They're a lively bunch.
Been busy around the house. Unpacked the new Brinsea Eco 20 you guys talked me into buying (y'all are probably getting kickbacks from Brinsea for advertising). We'll see if it is as magical as I've heard it is; it...
Here is my one Tuxedo male:
I have read that to get tuxedos, you can breed whites and Tibetans/Rosetta Tibetans and get them in two generations, or tuxedo to tuxedo or tuxedo to white and get them in one. Does anyone else have experience with tuxedos that they would like to share? Or...
What do most people consider more desirable for white quail? Are solid white birds preferred or birds with the dark spot on the backs of their heads?
For Manchurian Goldens, is more dark speckling preferred or less?
I'm thinning my flock of mixed young quail and am trying to decide who to...
So I was late going outside to put everything up last night. I usually check on the quail and bantams, who are all near the house, first and then let the dogs out to walk with me to the big coop. Last night, however, I gave the dogs some leftovers and left their gate open so that they could join...
These guys just hatched yesterday and last night. Not sure how many I've got so far, but it looks like I've got all the major colors. There's still eggs in the incubator, so we'll see if anyone else comes out to play.
Is there anything that I can use to treat a chicken pen to prevent the spread of disease for quail? I think using bleach inside the coop would work, but it has an attached dirt run. Would spraying bleach and letting it dry work, or is there something else I could use to prepare it?
I have a buff brahma bantam roo that has had noisy breathing for the past week or so. He is otherwise healthy, with no nasal discharge or any other issues. His hen has only been laying for a couple of months and her eggs alternate between hard and soft-shelled. Otherwise she is fine. We have...
I have heard a lot about not keeping quail and chickens together because there are diseases that may not be symptomatic in chickens, but will kill quail quickly. Does anyone know what those diseases are called? I haven't been able to find any specific info beyond just "don't keep them together"...
I have a three week old quail chick that will turn his head to the side and just kind of jerk it back and forth. It looks a little like a person fighting to stay awake. It eats, drinks and interacts just fine with the other chicks, but when they are just standing around it is the only one that...
I have my adult quail in a 6x6x6 ft pen with an indoor coop area that is about 2x2.5 ft. I am thinning out my flock to make room for younger quail so after this weekend I will have about 4 to 8 adults left. My chicks will be three weeks old this weekend. How long should I wait before adding them...
Do young chickens require immunizations/deworming or should they just be monitored for any health problems? All of my birds are healthy and alert, some just have the occasional watery poo. Just wondering if there is anything else I should be giving them.
