Okay. So I have been using deep bedding in the coop, which has worked well until... the roof blew off in a storm and now everything is soaked. I'm trying to clean out all the wet pine flakes, but struggling to find the best solution of how to get them out and dispose of them.
We don't have a...
Hi all! So, just picked up 2 TSC banties, that I believe are buff Cochin. Wondering if one or both might be frizzled?? No clue exactly how old, but both their wing feathers seem to be sticking out instead of flat against their bodies like the other 2 banties the same age (which I'm guessing are...
Okay, so I got this chick from rural king, as a golden comet pullet. Coloring seemed right for that at the time.
Now, Polly is 4 weeks old and really acts like a little cockerel. Very brave, runs up and chest bumps my hand whenever I'm messing with the brooder; also makes the little special "I...
Hey all! So I ordered a black bantam frizzled Cochin from Meyer. She hatched 8/28, so *almost* 2 weeks old. I don't think she's actually a frizzle 😭 literally the ONLY reason I placed an order was to get the frizzle. I ordered a couple other fun breeds just to get the minimum order, but I really...
Hi all. First time with quail. I hatched these guys 7/23, they're 6 weeks exactly. I had only 4 out of 12 eggs hatch. Of the 4, one started crowing a few days ago. No crowing or eggs from the others. They are all coturnix, but from my understanding were kept all together regardless of color. So...
Talk to me about the whole "male specific coloring" thing... I ordered 7 pullets, they sent 8, and I think 3 of them might be cockerels. One is an EE that just has a huge comb already- it's pale, but just so BIG for only being 4 weeks old.
Not my main question, but since I'm here anyway-...
This is my BYM I hatched- I believe she's a pullet. Dad is barred rock, and mom is Pavlovskaya. She is one of my favorites out of this hatch. She's around 13-14ish weeks.
I love her so much, she has so much personality both in looks and behavior.
Okay, so I have several RIR X light Brahma crosses. I was advised months ago that these *should* be sexable by color- males would be white, females red.
But these two should-be-pullets have me questioning the accuracy of that. They're from a staggered hatch, and are anywhere between 13-14...
So, I did a bit of an experiment. (Eggsperiment? 😅🤣)
Got 2 dozen corturnix eggs that had been refrigerated. Initially was going to eat them all, but randomly I decided to set half and see what happened, unsure if they'd been cold too long or not.
Well. One had a crack that I had missed upon...
So I had a bantam-sized egg I threw in the incubator. A coworker brought in a bunch of eggs and there was just one tiny egg. So I put it in with some others I had going. Well it finally hatched today, and I'm curious if anyone has an idea what it might be!
4 toes, lightly feathered legs and...
Okay so I finally was able to checkon the eggs one of my broody's been sitting on. A lot of them were obviously bad, either complete duds or it had started them quit.
One of the few good eggs that actually has good development and movement is huge. The air sac is on the side of the egg instead...
Okay so I went to check on my broody and her chicks (they've been slowly hatching since Saturday). Well Mama was out of the nest and showing her babies the food and water. One of the eggs in there looks like they were pecking it, and there's blood. There was another egg in the nest that I guess...
I have a broody that's hatched 5 out of her clutch of 10 so far. I also have some babies that are hatching in the incubator. Is it better to keep them separate in a brooder, or is it ok to tuck them under her? Is it pretty certain she'd accept them since she already has babies the same age? I...
Ok so, background info is I had a broody that switched nests after about a week of setting. I moved them to the incubator to try and save them. They all appeared to at least have veining at that point, but they were all at different stages as she'd been secretly adding to her clutch.
started...
So I had a broody who decided to swap nests after about a week. When I checked on the eggs they were cold. I went ahead and brought them in and let them warm up and put them in the bator. I candled, and see some veining but didn't seem like 7 days' worth, and I couldn't detect any movement...
3.5 week old Fayoumi injured her leg. I'm not sure how, but it happened at some point today, as she was perfectly fine and normal this morning. I went to check on them and top off their food and water before bed, and her leg is all twisted up!
She is bearing weight on it, but it's kind of just...
Well. I got this chickie and was told Buff Brahma bantam. But. After trying to figure her out because the comb just doesn't seem right for a Brahma, I think she might be a d'uccle. Thoughts? I'm pretty sure she has a single comb?
Hey everyone! So I heard you can feather sex Cochins pretty early, is this true? I have a bunch of 10-day olds and if google (and my interpretation) is correct, they're all male except for 2 😫
Would be very interested to know if this is an accurate sexing method. If so, I'll gladly post some...
TL;DR version- how frequently should I be crop feeding a days-old chick? Hatched on 2/22.
Full story: Okay, so I have a sick little chickie. She seemed fine upon arrival, but has been struggling with a dirty bum (which I've been cleaning multiple times a day), green watery diarrhea, and is...
