My hens live in a sand run and coop with shavings. They free range several times a week. We are thinking of mulching in the large garden area their coop stands on. They spend a lot of time foraging for bugs there.
Do any of you have experience with your flock and mulch? Is it ok for...
We have 6 heavy breeds- Easter Egger, Barred Rocks, Jersey Giant, Light Brahma, and Buff Orpington-all about 9 mos. old. We also have 2 polish "chicks" that are about 14 wks. now but are still significantly smaller. Those of you with Polish AND heavy sized hens...when do you add them to the...
I can't catch them! They ran under our raised back porch (3 polish chicks- 4wks. old). It's a raised porch with lattice...and hubby is not home to remove lattice so we can try to reach them. What do I do????? I am sure a snake/ cat will get them by morning.
We have 6 hens of various varieties that are between 9 mos. and nearly 1 year. We have no rooster, as we want these for pets/ egg layers only. This past week our Jersey Black Giant has gone loco (ie broody ::wink:. She is sitting in the 'favorite' nest box and won't get off the others' eggs...
We have a 10x4 Covered Sand Run. I was wondering what you all w/ covered sand runs do for maintenance?
Do you hose it down and turn sand?
Do you shovel out every so often (how often?) and add new sand?
Do you use DE in sand run?
As a new owner of both goats and hens...
Is it ok for me to let my chickens out of their coop to roam around in the goat pen? I mean, they are pecking around where goat feces is. (approx. 250 sq. feet for 2 dwarf goats and 6 chickens). Are there any parasites from the goats that could pose a...
Do hens ever lay after dusk/ before dawn? I am new to this and my hens just started laying.
I live in Florida, so heat is a factor, though it is Winter now. I try to collect twice a day---will try 3 times a day in summer months. What I want to know...is how long can a freshly laid egg sit...
I am currently using pine needles, as they seem to be easy to clean out. I am looking for ease of clean suggestions. My hens lay fine in them. Do you have a better method, and how often do you toss/ clean your nest boxes?
TIA
First of all, I live in Florida where heat is obviously more of a problem than cold. BUT:
1) Do I need to put a heat lamp in the coop for chickens over 4 months old if it drops below freezing? (We rarely get colder than in the low 30s.) So, at what temp do I need to have a heat lamp...
We live in Florida and are first time chicken owners/ coop builders. Finalizing the coop this week.
Our coop has attached run (which the chickens are in all day unless free- ranging for an hour late in the day). Do we need to put Water/ Food INSIDE of the closed coop for closing the hens up...
I live in Central Florida and am not familiar with Wyandotes. They look HEAVY and am not sure if they would surivive our heat/ humidity. Anyone in Florida have these?
TIA
@ 10wks. What breed (I was told Ameraucana) and is this a rooster?
Chicken in question is in the forefront to show greens in feathers- rooster?
I am comparing to this picture of what I think is the same breed/ but a hen in forefront @10wks:
If I have small children and he is a...
I am a newbie and bought 2 (what are supposed to be) Ameraucana pullets from a local reputable feed store. We also bought a BR and Black Giant at the same time. They are 8 wks. today. We love them all. I am concerned that one Ameraucana (my favorites so far) might be a rooster--little...
I am a new chicken owner (obviously) . We have an outside cat- and I know people have "Barn Cats". Will a cat harm a grown chicken? I know they certainly would harm tiny chicks. Ours are only 8 wks. old, so we've been keeping careful watch over them from EVERYTHING, but I am wondering if any...
We bought 4 pullets from a Feed Store (reputable in our town). They are 4 wks. old now. I was told they are:
2- Amercaunas
1- Black Giant
1- Barred Rock
Now...I'm wondering about the Ameraucanas...because I see a lot of confusion/mixed notes on BYC about Ameraucanas and EE. How do I tell...
If you live in hot/humid climate (we're in Central Florida) do the nipple waterers work for you? My friend said that her hens don't like how hot the water gets in those and don't drink enough in summer- so they end up putting an open tub of water out (messy) in the summers.
Also, if you have...
We are starting our coop soon...live in Central Florida and If we put the coop/run on cinder blocks, can we just put hardware cloth on the bottom of entire coop and that's it? or do we need to do an apron, too? confused a bit...
We plan on putting sand in the bottom of the run.
