I've read a bunch of threads on BYC about feather picking, and will start implementing higher protein diet and giving the girls some free range time during the day, unfortunately it has to be supervised because we have a neighbor dog who likes to break into our yard. But any other suggestions...
I went to let my girls out this morning and one of them just kind of toppled out....it also looked like one of the other chickens was kind of attacking her. She is laying on her side, I haven't observed and standing, walking, or even laying right. She is laying over on one side with her wing...
This is Jemima. She's a just over 9 months old, Cayuga and laying on her first nest...she is also laying on a couple unfertilized chicken eggs, so I will need to get those out when she's up. It looks like she has been pulling out her feathers to help make her nest. Is this possible or is she...
I have 3 ducklings. I got 2 females and 1 male, as suggested to me. My neighbor's landlord is making them get rid of their chickens and ducks. They have 2 adult male call ducks and 2- 4 month old ducklings (they think 1 male, 1 female). They need to find a home for them. I said I could possibly...
Just had to share a photo of my new babies!! 3 Cayuga ducks, 1 Salmon Favorelles, 1 Buff Golden, and 1 Light Brown Leghorn!! They are just so adorable!
I just got 3 ducklings this week. I was planning to remove the leg bands today, but then realized I needed to do it pronto because one of the bands looked very tight on one duckling. When I got her band removed she was limping....I think this is because the band was too tight.
Any...
Hi,
I'm re-starting a flock after losing my hens to a coyote two weeks ago :( I've only had hens before, but am thinking about adding a couple turkeys this time around.
I have some questions:
- If I get the chickies and poults at the same time will they get along?
- What turkey breed do you...
Hi,
I'm re-starting my flock....lost all my girls due to coyotes :(
What advantages are there to going with bantums instead of standard size chickens? Or vice versa!
Thanks!
Hi All,
I'm so sad to report that my last two chickens were killed tonight. About 3 months ago, my first girl was killed. We found her in our front yard, feathers around, with one large wound to the back...this was during the day. Tonight we found feathers around the yard and two of my girls...
I lock my girls up in the coop every night and we haven't had any issues with pests or predators. This morning, my SS Penny, was missing a bunch of tail feathers, like they had been plucked. She wasn't bleeding or hurt in any other way, but I'm wonder what may have done this. My boyfriend said...
Last Saturday, Penny, my SS, laid her first egg:
And yesterday, Amelia, my EE, laid her first egg!
Today Penny laid her second egg...no photo yet. I feel like a total chicken weird taking photos of their first, second...eggs. We're still waiting on Ms. Lola the BR.
Two of my girls have started to lay! Neither of them are laying in the nesting box. I put fake eggs in there, and they prefer to lay in the run in a little nest they made for themselves.
Should I take their eggs and put them in the nesting box? Or can I just take the eggs and eat them...
My SS laid her first egg yesterday, and second today....she laid them in her run underneath the ramp to the coop. I figured she felt safe there. Should I let her keep laying there? Move her eggs into the nesting box?
I've been very impatiently waiting for my first egg. My 3 girls, Amelia (EE), Lola (BR), and Penny (SS), are all almost 22 weeks old. I was sure that Lola was going to be the first to lay. Her comb and waddle are the most developed and very red! Today I go out to check on the girls and give...
My 20 week old SS started holding up her right leg and limping around two days ago. I'm hoping that she just strained it or something, she's eating, drinking, acting normal except for not putting any weight on the foot. She still roosted last night. I couldn't see anything wrong with it...

So...I'm trying to amend or at least create a process to obtain an exception to our city chicken ordinance. I contacted the Sustainable division of City Planning, they told me that the Animal Control division of the Police Dept are in charge of that. I contacted City Animal Control, they said...
I know I'm being impatient (my girls are just over 18 weeks), but I'm trying to predict when the first egg will be.
What age did your hens start laying at? I'm thinking there's a general range between 18-25 weeks.
Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!
