My wife says that she has problems with our eggs when she hard boils them. She says when she peels them it destroys the egg because it sticks to the shell and the egg meat gets removed. Her parents used to raise eggs and she had the same problem with her parents fresh eggs.
Is this a fresh...
Do any of you out there raise delawares strictly for meat. My understanding is they were the original commercial broiler back in the 40's. I don't really want to go the Cornish X route and would like to have a flock of meaties that I can raise self-sufficiently.
Do they pasture well?
So we took our christmas tree down last night and I had a great idea. I guess it goes to show how chicken math infects a person. I came up with the idea of buying a wood chipper so I could shred up our christmas tree and use the pine shavings for bedding, then I could offer to pickup anyones...
I use this feed and it says that it is Certified Natural. I know that to be Certified Natural Farm you can't use GMO's, so am I correct to assume that Layena Sunfresh doesn't have GMO's?
I'm interested in selling some of my eggs this year and am interested in what are the best ways to sell them?? Do you just hit up friends and family. I probably will only be able to support 3-4 customers each week until later in the year. I plan to expand this spring and increase my capacity...
I saw a video of an egg song and tonight two of our roosters were making a heck of a racket. We went out there and they were singing the egg song. it went buck-buck-buck-buck-bagawww or something of that nature. They were singing kinda in unison. why would a rooster make this noise. There...
I've started my hens on some oyster shells free choice to help them in their egg production. We got a rubber egg yesterday. I also put some grit in their feed to help with digestion. Now that they ahve access to oyster shells, will this act like grit to them since its hard or do I still need...
Today is a momentous occasion. First time we've gotten more than 1 egg and first time one of them has laid in the nesting boxes. The blue was dropped from the roosting bar and has a crack but the brown egg was laid perfectly this morning and didn't need cleaning. We've gotten 2 previous eggs...
I got my first "egg" yesterday, but unfortunately they dropped it from their roosting bar and it broke when it landed on the water dispenser. This morning, I noticed that several of my hens are burrowing down in the pine shavings on the floor. They refuse to use the nesting boxes that I built...
I'm interested in getting a few turkeys sometime in the future and was wondering at what is a general age for butchering. I know it probably differs depending on the breed and the size you want, but I'm thinking of a holiday turkey somewhere around 20-25 lbs. thanks.
Just curious as to why I should have a rooster in my flock of hens? It seems to me that you would only have one if you were interested in breeding your hens. If I'm not interested in breeding, should I have a rooster?
I just finished my coop and the nest is 8 feet long running the length of the coop. I was originally going to break this up into 4 nesting boxes but ran out of material. Can I just leave this as one large nest box or should I use chicken wire to divide them up. I'm finding all my girls like...
I've read somewhere that for the DLM to work properly you need to add food grade Diatomaceous Earth. I called my local Southern States and they have DE but said it wasn't food grade. Can I use this or does it really need to be Food Grade.
I just got these three from my neighbor and she isn't sure if these are hens or not. She says they are about 6 weeks old. Can you help me out and tell me if these are pullets or cockreels. I have 3 cochins total. Thanks so much.
