I cant say for sure when i first spied this, but its been more than 2 months. Hen is either 2 or 3 years old and otherwise seems quite happy and healthy. Not sure she is laying right now but everyone is just slowly coming back into lay after hard fall molt and cold dark winter.
Any gusses? Or "...
*******edit to say that there are graphic (to some) images added below******
We've been nursing along our ailing 3 year old Orpington nearly a month now. Nothing we did seemed to help. She finally died last night.
I've previously cut open a few other birds that had been culled for various...
Good idea? Or bad? I've run out of ideas on what to do for one of my 3 year old hens who is wasting away. She has lost so much weight and I really just cannot figure out what else to do for her.
So I'm going to worm her. But....I'd really like to not have to worm everyone and toss eggs from...
And listless for about 2.5 weeks.
I noticed her gunky looking butt feathers about 2.5 weeks ago and dunked her in water to soak poop off. Clipped a few feathers that would not come clean. She is just clearly not feeling well. I've given her little bits of extra protein trying to boost her over...
We had 3 hens that needed to go for various reasons. My husband is a hunter and 'okay' with doing the deed, but quite frankly has limited experience killing things with his hands rather than a gun.
So, we read up on the topic and used the method where you lie the chicken on the ground with...
she is 16 weeks old and been in seemingly excellent health.
We have a set of 3 older hens and the 3 16 weekers all in the run. It was a reasonably smooth transition and the babies have learned to stay out of the way of the 'boss'. It is not unusual to hear some noise though, but today it was...
So I understand how the whole sex link thing works...but I'm concerned anyhow! We have a couple of 8 weeks olds and I've looked at online pictures of Black Sex Links and see that there is a wide variation of a hens colors. But cannot get a clean image of what a roo would look like.
I have a...
Our chickens free range daily in the yard, my garden grows in the same general area too. Is there any safe way to treat the yard and get rid of the fleas without doing in the chickens?
I've seen Sevin mentioned over the time I've been here. Just not sure how safe it is for the chickens to eat...
And not the chicken house!!!
Our home/dog/life is infested with fleas. We are working on that and I think making headway. I moved the babies and their brooder out to the patio while we treated the house. Chemicals and all of that being bad for the animals.
It was time to move them out...
We picked up 3 babies today, guessing 2 day olds. Everyone was happy for about 4 hours and for the last hour or so our little barred rock will not shut up! She is also trying to escape...trying to squeeze though the wire of the brooder, which is a bunny cage. I don't *think* she can actually...
When might I expect eggs again?
She was a tough nut to crack, but finally she is back with her buddies in the coop, ranging as she should and generally staying outta the nest. It's been 2 nights that she successfully joined the gang.
I'm sure there is a wide variance of normal...but??
One of them seems to clearly be molting so when I noticed her naked backside it seemed like no biggie. But now 3 out of 4 of my hens have reasonably large naked spots on their butts! One of them molted in the fall...so it would surprise me that she would be doing that again (or maybe that is not...
While I think it's pretty icky...really I'm concerned that it could be unhealthy for us! Is it okay for us to eat the eggs of poop feasting chickens?
The yard is cleaned up, but it not always a daily thing. Or even if it a daily thing, the dogs will still go do a stealth poop and when the...
for 4 weeks?!Normal?
The girl in question is a sex link (kind of look like rhode island reds to me) and I'm certain she was the one who laid the oops eggs. She is 24 weeks old. Her flockmate from the same bin began laying a day or two before I found the no shelled eggs (on the poop board). So...
I have a BR pullet, 28 - ish weeks who old began limping about 1 month ago. She walks with a toe touch weight bearing. I asked advice already about her...got nothing, so I'm hoping that a picture might be of help.
She is laying fine, shows up for meals, forages and otherwise seems healthy...
and seemingly no other issues.
To be concerned or not?
Chicken in question is 8 months old, laying regularly, shows up for meals, goes out to forage in the yard, out of the coop daily. But...she looks uncomfortable and is always the last one to show up. I watched her out today and she does...
In the winter that is?
I've got the part about keeping the water from freezing figured out. The part I can't figure out (at least with out us shelling out many more $$ than we currently have!) is where I am going to get water to fill/clean the waters? We shut off all outside water for about 4...
But I honestly cannot tell the difference in taste of our eggs laid by our own chickens vs store bought eggs.
I'm really not getting it. They look beautiful. Pretty yolk, nice solid whites. I can cook several in the pan at a time because they don't run all over the place. But I'm certain that...
Not the beauty bark landscaping stuff....
We have a large uncovered run for our 5 girls and it has turned into a giant dust bowl. The flies are awful. The dust in the house is awful (3 windows face the run area....it's bad. I see the dust blowing in through the windows) I really underestimated...
