Do all drakes do a "victory lap" after mating? ;)

I have a drake, whose name is Jake. The duck pool is outside the run as of now. When things start freezing, I will put a smaller pool in the run. I am new to ducks, and I love my two. Every morning, when I let chickens and ducks out of the run, Daisy and Jake head straight for the pool and...

And then there was one. :(

My husband brought home 3 ducklings from the hardware store May 15th. Right away I noticed that the crested duck had a wry neck and possibly deformed wing on one side. He was a little wobbly but otherwise getting around ok. The other 2 were happy and healthy. I started supplementing niacin...

Breed please? She was all black but now has brown

I think this is a female, she was all black as a duckling. She is about a month old. I think it's a cayuga. I'm new to ducks. Thank you. :)

Hen laid weird mass. I dissected it. *gross photos*

M y golden comet "Trouble" has been laying thin shells since about July. She laid fine until then, but since July her eggs are almost always broken when I collect eggs. None of my other hens lay eggs like this, and have always had oyster shell available- so I know it's just her egg mechanism...

When the rooster does his "dance" I get get this song in my head. Every time.

Does this happen to anyone else? :D KC and the Sunshine Band: "Get Down Tonight". Do a little dance... Make a little love...

Note: flock block will attract large critters.

I always knew that the flock block in the run attracted squirrels and chipmunks, but this morning I went out to refill the water in the run, and saw the biggest porcupine I have ever seen in my life. And I've seen a LOT of porcupines. He must have been in the run when I closed up last night...

Does anyone have the multiple-grafted fruit trees? I ordered a few and would like some feedback.

We had an old pear tree that had to come down last year. I ordered some fruit trees, including a 3-on-1 cherry with 3 different varieties, and a fruit cocktail tree and a 5-on-1 pear tree from Burgess. Also ordered a plum and a peach tree from Miller Nurseries for zones 4-5. Never started...

GLWxPartridge Rock pullet lays green/olive egg? Wyandotte and "Egg Color" people please check this

I guess I'll start from the beginning... In May, my roo (only roo I had at the time-yes I'm positive!) died. I gathered eggs for the next few days and incubated 6 eggs. The hens I had at that time were only 3 breeds: Partridge Rocks, Dominique's, and rose comb Brown Leghorns. I got 2...

Anyone know about using nu-stock on poultry?

I read on one website that carries it (I can't remember which site now- I was surfing a lot for customer reviews) that it shouldn't be used on pregnant or lactating animals. I wonder if this means there should be an egg withdrawal period? I also read that the sulphur can be a lung irritant...

2 different problems? One hen w/ascites, other hens' poo showed "coccidia" according to vet.

I hate to be long-winded, but I feel I need to start at the beginning. For 3 days, it was very hot and humid here. When I came home from work on the first hot day, there was one hen moving a little more slowly than everyone else, but she seemed fine otherwise. She turned a year old in...

Move younguns to big coop or let them go on their own? Update-it was easier than I thought.

This is my first flock integration. My big girls are just over a year old, and there are 11 of them. I moved my nine 5-week olds out to the separate grow out coop and run which is adjacent to the big girl coop and run. They watched each other through the wire for a few weeks. Last weekend...

Is there a way to filter out the "games, jokes, and fun" posts?

If I get a gold feather membership, is there a way to filter out all the role playing and games posts? They're always popping up in the "new threads" area because there are always so many new replies. I can see how some people like those, but if there's a way to not have to sift through them...

Black sex links from Dom x GLW- still good layers?

I'm very new to chickens. So new that I hatched sex links without realizing it! (yay!) All the reading here on BYC about BSL's seem to include barred rocks and red roosters. I have heard that wyandottes lay about 3-4 eggs/week. My doms lay about 3-4 eggs/week. Is the laying ability more...

Brinsea mini advance- my first time using this bator. *update* All 6 successfully hatched!

I set Monday at 2:45 pm. I ran the new incubator for an hour, everything seemed to be great,. I figured out how to scroll though the settings and change them for turning, etc. I am wondering if I've done something wrong, or not saved properly. The days display is not showing a number. It...

Partridge Rockindottes, GL Brown Leghorndottes, and Wyandiques! Oh my!

My sweet GLW roo died while gallantly defending the girls against who knows what. He was the only grown roo I have, and He was such a sweety that we wanted to incubate some of his eggs. Anyone ever cross these before? I'm sure I'll get some interesting chicks. I was also wondering about...

Hm. will a BC Marans comb start "pinking up" as early as 4 weeks? *updated with photos*

II got 2 Black Copper Marans chicks from my pet chicken on April 10th. I ordered 2 vaccinated females. The 2 chicks look exactly the same as far as leg size, height, and feathering. But one of the combs is now slightly taller and is starting to have a VERY light pink tint, while the other is...

I'm amazed that my Dominiques lay larger eggs than my Partridge Rocks.

The two largest eggs shown in the photo are Dom eggs. The smallest egg is an egg from my largest partridge rock. The egg size fluctuation is quite extreme, even with my brown leghorns. The girls finally get up to almost "large" on the egg scale, then squeeze out a small egg. I just find it...

Oyster shell chunks too large- they bill it out and make a huge mess- waste most of it.

Currently I'm giving manna pro oyster shell free choice. My girls bill it out to find the smallest pieces, leaving much of it on the floor of the coop and on the ground in the run. The only ones I ever see at the shell feeders are my leghorns. My partridge rocks have thinner shells...

Yet another thread on egg eating! Will there be gooey stuff /egg insides in the shavings?

On Sunday I noticed one of my partridge rocks running out of the coop with an egg hanging from her mouth. I thought, "Oh, GREAT." I grabbed the remaining egg from her and collected the rest of the eggs. The culprit then left the run area to rejoin her flock mates ranging out in the...
