Newly Hatched Chick sits on Rump

Hi, I have a chick that seems to put weight on her legs but definitely isn't walking normal. She seems to put her weight back on her rump. Her toes seem normal and her legs don't seem to be abnormal. She can get around a bit. She's definitely wobbly and unbalanced. Any ideas?

    Advice on hens hatching eggs

I have a SFH that seems pretty broody. I usually have to convince her to get off of the eggs that I collect everyday. I was thinking she would be a good candidate to sit on some fertile eggs. I have 8 hens total and I am wondering how the others would respond to the new chicks, also, is it...

My dog killed my hen... :(

My hens get out of their pasture once in a while and my new dog will chase them and twice I have caught her on top of the hen playing with her but never hurting her. The hen would lay there limp and then get up, shake it off, and I'd get her back in her pasture. I was wrong to assume my dog...

    Foxtail in eye

My hen has a foxtail in her eye. My husband said he can see it sticking out. I haven't been able to see that but I did notice her eye was shut one day, a little more open the next, fully open today but there is a bulge under her lid. Any advice on how to remove it?

Can I "trick" my hens into sitting on some eggs?

I'm moving to some property and finally get to have a real flock of chickens! I started with four and am down to two. I'd like to have at least 8-10 when I get settled. I also want to hatch eggs. I was thinking I could collect my eggs that my hens give me everyday and replace them with a...

So my hen is trying to lay her FIRST egg. This is MY first egg as well as a chicken owner. She has been trying to push it out for at least 2 hours that I know of. The rest of the morning she had been hanging out in her nesting box. She has since come out and is walking around the yard...

    Mean Chickens!

In the past few weeks, 2 of my 4 chickens have become fearless and MEAN to us! At first it was just me... ANYTIME I go in my backyard my RIR and Barred (Plymouth?) Rock run up to me (which used to be cute) and try to peck at my feet. I have become afraid of them! I've had them since they were...

My chicks are about to spend their first night in their coop! Do they need access to food and water in the coop or do they sleep through the night without it like us humans?!

    Free Ranging Chickens??

Hi peeps, I imagined when I got chickens that they would be ranging in my backyard all day long. Then I started reading about all the predators and now have scared myself silly. My chicks are 6 weeks old now and have been kept in a makeshift pen all day long moved in different spots of the...

    Candled the eggs last night...

11 out of 12 were "veiny" which I took as a sign that the babies were growing! My question is, if I assume the conditions in the incubator remain the same, will 11 hatch? Or is there a chance that some may stop developing?

About to start incubating for the first time! What do I need to know?

Here's the backstory... I got eggs from a friend, his rooster and chickens roam freely together all the time. He dropped off a dozen eggs last Saturday afternoon 4/2 unexpectedly. I put them on my counter and had to go out to a bday party with the kids. I didn't put them in the refrigerator...

    Chicks wasting their food!!

So as soon as I fill up their food jar and feeder it is gone again! They keep scratching it all out! There is food all over their pine shavings so I'm tempted to not fill up their feeder and force them to eat and peck off the floor. What do you guys think?

Pine shavings and Poop... what to do??

I have been cleaning my chicks brooder as needed by scooping out little piles of poop! This was fine until yesterday... I think they are starting to poop a lot more on day 7! They now are getting poop stuck to their feet so today I was planning on replacing the pine shavings. What should I...

    Homemade Incubator?

I was thinking of making an incubator for some fertile eggs I have coming to me today. Is it as simple as a light bulb, water tray for humidity, thermometer, and turning three times a day? I don't want to set myself up for failure because I have a 4 year old that is looking forward to hatching...

Treats for chicks and Brooder Temperature...

My six day old babies are begging me for treats! Ok, not really, but I am dying to spoil them! With my "real" babies I waited FOREVER to feed them solid food to make sure their bellies could handle it... Should I follow these same rules with my birdy babies too? I heard they like boiled eggs...
