How do you tell eggs are good

I did a search and came up with 115 pages of everything with the slightest mention of an egg. We found 4 of our eggs in the neighbors dog house for their cat and have no idea how long they were there. I know there is a way to tell by putting in water but I can't remember the whole saying. Thanks

I bought one of these at TSC, it's a 3.5 gal. The thing leaks out all the water. If I fill it at night the next morning all thats left is the water in tray. I did put some vasaline on the rubber O-ring to see if it will seal. Has anybody had this problem with these?
