My hens discovered the foil covered insulation in their coop and just about cleaned it out in a day. They seem perfectly fine. I am worried about the eggs though. Would they be safe to eat? Thanks in advance!
I have approx 20 1 yr old hens that I thought were molting through the winter, seeing as that they were were completely bald backed. A neighbor who is an oldtimer said that the particularly bald ones were "getting the roosters attention" and that's why they were bald. Any advice? It has been...
The 2nd picture I am posting is of the biggest and blondest of the EEs. It is becoming a little aggressive. Wondering if this was the rare freebie and it is a roo. Too bad we already named it Dolly Parton!
Hi everyone,
I ordered 10 EEs, 10 Buff Orpingtons, and 5 Brown Leghorns from McMurray 2 weeks ago. I thought they had miscounted the Buffs b/c I had 13 of them and only 8 EEs (they all look like chipmunks). Now, I think maybe that some of the chicks that look like Buffs are indeed EEs. Their...
I posted the other day that one of my EE chicks was "hiccuping". I thought at first that she was choking but she wasn't. She is an otherwise normal chick. Perhaps not 100% strength like her sisters, but OK. Well, the hiccuping is now accompanied by a peep. Anyone have any ideas as to what this...
Sorry for the gross post but I am a little concerned over my 7 day old chicks who have the runniest diarrhea. I don't remember this with our last brood in '08. We feed them chick starter, a little scratch and have the vitamin powder that McMurray sent to put in their water. We have lost 4 chicks...
Hi everyone,
One of my new chicks (approx 7 days old) started making a hiccup-like action yesterday afternoon. I thought she was choking at first but it has persisted through this morning. She is becoming very weak. Any ideas on what it could be? Each time she "hiccups" it moves her whole body.

Here is a sample of what we collected today. We had an average white egg from our Pearl White Leghorn, a jumbo probably double yolker from our Ameracauna, and then this teensy little egg. It could be from a RIR or a Dominique. Have you ever seen anything like this before? Our girls are 5 mos old...
My sons went to collect eggs and found one of our white leghorns in her nest. Within a couple minutes, she laid an egg. They waited for her to hop out to get the egg. As they waited a couple minutes, they saw her lay another egg. I thought for sure they just saw the golf ball we had left in...
Does anyone have experience getting an egg producer license in their state? We have friends and family clamoring for eggs and we'd like to sell some to cover our costs but we don't want to get in trouble. The state of Tennessee sent us a bunch of forms as if we are operating a full-scale...
Our flock is 17 weeks old and about a week ago we noticed a couple of roosters breeding the white leghorns. Is there a relationship between hen breeding and first egg production?
Hello all,
I have posted this question before and gotten great responses. The suggestions of yogurt, cottage cheese and raisins have made me quite popular with my girls. This afternoon, I fed them some leftover bagged salad that came with dried cranberries, feta cheese and almond slivers. They...
After getting a lot of teasing from my neighbors and friends over our obsession with our chickens and their hopefully critter proof run, we decided to name it the "Palais des Poulets" aka Chicken Palace
I have discovered that my 11 wk old chickens go crazy over green grapes. I try to halve them before giving them out but some of my roos will steal one before I can stop them ans swallow them whole. They love plain yogurt and strawberries too. Bananas didn't interest them very much. The RIRs like...
We moved our chickens from their warming room to their new coop last week, and we have noticed that one of our CM roos was limp. He limps when he walks and will rest his bad foot/leg on his good foot when he is standing. Initially we thought that maybe he might have been injured in the move but...
My husband just built this chicken coop and run last week. It is perfect right now while the weather is so nice. We are worried about the lack of shade once it gets a little hotter. Can anyone recommend something? We want it look nice as well as being fun and practical. Thanks!
I have 26 9wk old chickens that have been kept in a heated room in our barn up until this week. I have moved them to a new coop and covered outdoor run this week. They refuse to come out of the coop. When we coax them outdoors, they run back up the ramp to get back inside or the hide under the...
I have 5 Ameraucana hens that I got from Murray McMurray 8 wks ago. When they arrived as 2 day olds, 3 looked like little chipmunks and two looked like dark brown mink fur. Now that they are all feathered out, they all have the same body coloring (gold and black splash?) but either black or...
