This was sold as a 6wk old aracauna pullet.

I'm guessing its not aracauna as she has a tail? But also is already clucking (sounded either like an alert or egg song) whereas my other chooks at 10wks are still cheeping and chirping. And she looks small rather than young. Is she some sort of aracauna crossbred with a bantam?

10wk Australorps... please tell me at least one of these is a pullet!!!

At 5wks old, it was clear one was a roo. He already had a red comb and wattles. But now at 10wks one has started crowing and I can't figure out which one it is, as now they BOTH have red combs. My other chooks are different breeds so these are the only two I have to compare with. They are...

First huge eggs, then prolapse, now huge BROKEN eggs!

I have a hen here (a red cross) who is around 18 months old, she had been laying quite large eggs compared to the other girls, and recently one got stuck and broke in her vent, which prolapsed. I managed to sort out the prolapse and get her back to normal with a few days of TLC and low light...

Infectious Bronchitis in just one chicken? Will she recover? Will she remain contagious?

One of our girls seems to have infectious bronchitis or something similar. I separated her from the flock as soon as I noticed she wasn't well and the others have so far shown no symptoms at all, but everything I've read suggests that it's VERY infectious and they will all get it. She's in a...

Can I make a treadle operated nest box???

I have one adult chook in the run with four 8wk olds and unfortunately, the way the pecking order is working out at the moment, the big girl has two roosts all to herself at night while the four babies sleep in the nest boxes. I made a treadle feeder for the chooks, and that's working out...

Putting a single 1yr old hen in with four 8 week old chicks? *UPDATE*

I have two adult hens and four chicks but one of the adults is very ill and I expect she won't survive beyond today. My question is, what can I do with the remaining adult? Is it too soon to do an intensive "getting to know you" session to try and integrate her into the coop with the babies...

Hen has three shell-less eggs over three days, not eating, very subdued

As the title says, Tuppence has laid three 'eggs' now over three days that have just been a pile of loose egg white and a tiny bit of yolk, as well a bit of fecal matter. They have all had some, but not much, blood. Yesterday's "egg" seemed to have the shell membrane passed separately, but the...

Hen has eaten water saving crystal gel stuff.... what can I do?

I noticed one of my girls has lost a little bit of weight lately although still looks and acts healthy. But today, she left a very watery looking poop on my doorstep, and another on the roof of the nesting boxes, and both contained what looked like clear jelly. After a bit of detective work...

Green eggs are bad eggs! ;P

Or at least, that's what I thought before I found BYC. We always used to buy light brown eggs at our local farmers market, but one day all the eggs for sale had a weird green look about them. I jokingly asked the vendor "What are you feeding the chooks? Spinach?" He laughed and shrugged...

Can you tell a 'regular' chick from a bantam chick?

Still wondering why one of our chicks hasn't grown much and is half the size of the others, and I asked the supplier who said maybe there was a mixup. She certainly looks like a light sussex, but I've read that they come in bantam as well. If I've ended up with a bantam light sussex, is there...

Do you persist with handling the young chicks that don't like it? **SUCCESS** :)

I'm noticing the different personalities of the new chicks becoming more obvious each day. (They are 4 weeks old now) Freckles, the Ancona, is great at being picked up. She'll approach me, sit or stand quietly in my hand when I pick her up, will stand in front of me and let me reach out and...

No eggs from Tuppence yesterday..... today she laid one weighing 101 grams!!!

Shown here next to a normal sized 61g egg. I bet she'll be walking with a limp for the rest of the day! LOL

Does this sort of feather always mean frizzle?

Lacey is meant to be a light sussex but when I put these pics in the Raising Chicks part of the forum it was suggested she might have some frizzle in her. The supplier said if she comes through all white then maybe there was indeed a mix-up, but a few days later and I can see she's definitely...

    Moving photos between albums

Is it possible to move photos from one album to another? I'd like to sort my photos better now that we have the option of different albums, only I don't want to have to upload them again just to get them in a separate album.

Babies first night in their new coop - and I'm so worried!

The silly thing is, I'm not worried they might be too cold, but worried they might be too hot! LOL Last night it only got down to 91 indoors (probably a bit cooler outside) and since the brooder was getting way too hot for them I've moved them early into the new coop, hoping the more "open"...

Is my coop warm enough for chicks overnight?

The coop has four walls (double layer with an air pocket in between), the floor is waist high off the ground with a hole in it off to one side for the ramp to come up through, and a wire mesh ceiling with polycarbonate panels 20cm above it. I can put cardboard or plywood temporarily over the...

Lacey the Light Sussex chick has really weird wing feathers!

Are these normal? ALl the other chicks (different breeds) have wing feathers that grow in the same direction all nice and even, but Lacey's look like she's been ruffled the wrong way and got stuck there! She's just on 3 weeks old.

What do you think of this coop name?

I was reading a joke that went "A: Why does a coop have two doors. Q: Because if it had four it would be a sedan" My coop has three doors so I thought maybe it would be cute to call it "The Hatchback". (And of course the "hatch" reference to eggs) Is this really lame or not?

Camera in the coop? Where do I begin looking?

I'm thinking of adding a camera in the new coop, but I have no power installed there so I'm hoping there's such thing as a wireless, battery operated camera that I can view the images from it live on my computer. If there is such a thing, can someone post me a pic or link so I can figure out...
