    Brooder question

Last spring was our first year with chickens, both meaties and layers. We didn't know better and put the brooder in our playroom. By the time they were ready to go out to their tractor, their was a thin layer of "dust" on everything in the room (nasty). So this year we are only doing meaties...

How different is raising chickens compared to duck?

We have 8 chickens right now (started last spring) and we love them. They have a nice coop and run, but free range during the day. We also have a 1/2 acre pond and thought about getting a few (2) ducks for pets. Do they need a "coop" too or do they just act like wild ducks and sleep where ever?

Some of the flock still not laying

I got 7 BA and 1 Americana last March. I know 4 are laying and have been for months! The other 4 have not layed and now that's it's winter, will they? Or is it hopeless until spring? Is something wrong with them or does it take some longer than others?

Processing is a ton of work lol

Wow, so yesterday we processed for our FIRST time 13 meaties. I prepared by reading and getting so much information here (thank you all), but nothing prepares you for actually doing it. It took us all day and we still have 4 left because it was getting dark. My feet hurt from standing on...

What is the cut off date for meaties?

We are so far behind on a ton of projects and this heat has been horrible for wanting to do anything outside. Our cornishx are 10 weeks now (we were planning on doing them at 8ish weeks). We are almost done with building a chicken plucker (hubby started it from scratch and is doing an amazing...

    Chickens in the winter

So I live in Michigan. We are building our coop right now and insulating it. How do chickens do in the cold weather? Do they mostly stay in their coop all day or do they venture out in the snow. Sorry if this is a dumb question lol, I am brand new to this. Their run will have a roof so...

OMG my 3 year old fed my chickens rubber worms

My 3 year old just fed the chicken some icefishing worms, the small rubber kind. They are 2 months old. I can't believe he even thought to get them out of DH's fishing stuff to "feed" them. I'm really worried, can they pass something like that or will they have digestive problems? They are...

    Organ Meat

So what organ meat do you eat and how do you cook it? I don't think I'd like to eat it, but would put them into soups for stock flavor/vitamins. Any other ways? Also, if we don't like it, do you ever feed it to your dog raw? I heard that's good?

    Automatic plucker machines

Has anyone made their own and can share plans/where to buy the items needed? Or does anyone here sell them already made or know the cheapest place to buy them? I've seen them in use and it looks much easier than hand plucking!!

Leaving them overnight in the chicken tractor

We just built a chicken tractor for our meaties. This is our first batch ever. They are almost 3 weeks old and mostly feathered. We have been taking them outside in the chicken tractor during the day so they can forage around and get fresh air then bringing them back into the house to their...
