Rooster and her first egg. Strangest behavior I have ever witnessed.

I watched this behavior for over an hour. One of my heritage RIR hens was about to lay her first egg. She was complaining loudly and going in and out of the coop and in general acting discombobulated. My young rooster (Henry) was anxious and acting troubled because of the hen's actions. He also...

    newbe has brooder questions.

I'm supposed to have 25 LF chicks sent to me soon, and have several questions. I thought to start out keeping them in the house in a cardboard box for the first 2 weeks. Then I would like to move them out to the garage for the next 4 weeks or so. I thought I would construct a plywood brooder for...

How do I get ready to show.

Ok, now that I've got a couple of chickens good enough to show, what do I do next? Do I just sign up a week or so early and take my birds there on the day of the show? Do I have to contact someone from the State and have the birds tested or will they do that at the show before it starts? Does...

    How does one "set" eggs?

I have purchased a new GQF 1502 incubator, and am getting ready to incubate this early spring. I've read alot about candleing eggs to see if they are fertile, and I think I understand that part. But have several other questions. Does "set" mean to place the clutch of eggs in an incubator? How...

What GQF incubator has electronic thermostat ?

I was told by a very knowledgable breeder that I should buy a GQF incubator with an electronic thermostat. He said it was the 1202 sportsman but all that I can find have wafer type thermostats. So, does anyone know what GQF incubator I need and where is a good place to buy it?

    REALLY, really strange egg,

Floppy top, a hactery New Hampshire Red, was acting strange for two or three days. I noticed that her bottom was enlarged and that she was almost catatonic in her actions. I checked her for the obvious things and couldn't tell for sure but thought maybe she was becoming egg bound. Then the next...

How is it that a person has say a dozen eggs or so and it is obvious that they were layed over a period of days, yet they all hatch out at almost the same time ? Is there a way to keep fertilized eggs in suspended animation until you have enough of them to place in an incubator? When someone...
