    Peahen is acting strange

My 4 year old peahen has been acting strange for a few days. She is walking kind of slow, her back seems a little hunched up and her wings are pointing down. She is not as active. I wondered if she might be trying to get her first egg of the season out. She just looks a little uncomfortable...

11 new baby chicks and 2 vanishing eggs??

Yesterday my broody hen hatched out 11 eggs. We transferred her from her spot into a large wire dog kennel to keep predators away. She had two eggs she was sitting on and today they were gone! No chick, no broken shells, nothing! The chicks are all fine and accounted for. Would the hen have...

    Odd behavior

I have one male and two females peafowl that free range. All day today they have been in the barn rafters above the hay, which I only find strange because they are always out running around the yard. Could they be watching an egg in the hay? Do the protect their eggs?

Completely black hen mottled with white all the sudden??

I am stumped. I have a coal black hen that over the past two weeks has begun sprouting white feathers all over! She is mottled with white feathers. It is so strange. Anyone have any idea why that would be? I was going to upload a picture of her, but can't seem to figure out how to do it with the...

Please help! One dead D'Uccle, several sneezing including my peacock!

Bought 8 new chickens at a sale, quarantined them for 30 days. Nothing appeared to be wrong and I noticed no symptoms to worry about. Turned them loose with the rest of my flock including a pair of peafowl. Went to the shed to open it this morning and one of my favorite girls was dead. I didn't...

Need help to identify this giant!

Got this guy and a few more 30 days ago, after quarantine I am finally able to get a decent picture (somewhat). I am pretty sure he is a rooster, however I have never heard him crow... The pictures do not do justice to how big he is. Does anyone know what breed it is or if I am correct about...

    Happiness is...

Today, while feeding my flock in the coop, I realized that a metal scoop on a 20 some degree morning is not the best idea. By the time I was done scooping my hand was freezing!! Note to self: Must replace with plastic or put some gloves in the coop. Then I went to the nesting boxes and found...

    Question about poisoning

Our barn cat is getting old and I have noticed an increase in mice around the coop. I have also seen rats on our acerage, but not for 3 years. We had poison out before because we had no animals to worry about. My question is if I put more poison out, (secured so my free range flock cannot get to...

I have been getting some odd eggs...

Over the last couple of weeks I have found some weird eggs! My girls have access to lots of grit. I did accidentally pick up crushed granite (I think) instead of my usual oyster shell. Could that make a difference? They are on 16% layer. Don't know which of my girls lay this speckled, coppery...

    The Alpha goes down!

For the last five months Big Red, the RIR rooster at our happy homestead, has ruled the roost. He has ruled his small village with an iron fist, even waging wars on unsuspecting small children who attempt to enter his territory as well as large, full grown children. He has bullied everything...

    Question about my peafowl

For the last week or so, my peahen and peacock have been going into the coop at night. It is chilly here in Iowa. Down to the 40's or so. They always roosted in the trees till this point. I have only had them since spring, so them going in the coop when it gets dark is new. They lay on the floor...

What chickens lay the BIGGEST eggs??

My chickens lay medium to large- BO, BR, BSL, etc. When I go to our local Amish market, the eggs are GIGANTIC. Each one is jumbo. They say their chickens are a mixed breed. I want BIG eggs. What would everyone suggest as a good breed to purchase for the biggest eggs? (My bantam eggs are my...
