    Broken eggs

My girls have finally started laying in the coop and not in the woods. But now atleast one egg a day is broken. The shells on some eggs seem to be thinner than others. They are free range and also hava access to a feeder. Is their diet lacking something or is this normal?

    No eggs?

I have 2 BR hens that are 11 months old. I have yet to get an egg from either one. They are freerange for the most part. The only time they are put up is when we let our dogs out to play. What could be the cause? They are both healthy looking, although is a little large than the other. Any ideas...

    Gardens and chickens

This is my first spring with both a garden and chickens. I have 2 BR hens that spend most all day with a free run of our yard. When my garden is planted, do they need to be fenced out to keep from eating the plants or will they simply help wih bugs? The garden is only about 8 x 12 in size.

    Unknown breed

In July we purchased what we thought were 5 BRs and 3 silkies, unknown sexes from a small local farmer. We ended up with 3 BR hens, 1 BR rooster, the silkies I still don't know how too tell which is which, and one unknown. I am sure she is a hen, but she is black with a pretty blue/green color...

    Winter coming

I have 4 BRs, 3 silkies, and 1 who knows. I am in central NC with a 4x8 coop. Do I need to put a heat lamp in at night? If so, how cold is too cold? I have noticed the silkies huddle together in one corner and the others line up next to each other on one of the roosts inside. Is there any reason...

    New coop behavior

I put my chickens ( now 6 weeks old) into their new home on Sunday. The first night they all stayed inside and stayed there all day Monday until around 6pm. They then came out and ate and pecked around the rest of the evening. I went out around 10 and they were all bundled together in the corner...

    Black BRs

I got 5 BR chicks at 5 days old. One was black, the other looked like the BRs usually do. The chicks are now 6 weeks and that one is still solid black, with what looks loke red under his feathers. Is this normal? This one is also bigger than the others.

    Chiackens and dogs

I am getting ready to buy 4 or 5 chicks to raise for eggs. I currently have 2 dogs, a lab and a terrier mix. Is there anything anyone can suggest as to socialize them so the dogs won't chase the chickens or agitate them. I will have a coop and fenced run for them so them, but I don't want the...

What are the best breeds to start with for egg layers?

I am wanting to get into raising chickens for the eggs and to give me and my children something to learn together. What are the best breeds to start with and how big should the coop be? I was thinking of starting with maybe 4-5. Also, how much room outside the coop do they need. I think I will...
