    Essential Oils for injured hen?

I have a starter kit of essential oils from young living, and our hens were attacked the other night. One of them has black rough specks on her face (mites maybe?) and a gouge at the base of her tail from a bite. Are there essential oils I can put on her wound and/or face to help her out?

Top Hen Bullying 9 week old Pullets

We slowly and gradually integrated our pullets in with our year old hens, and ever since the beginning of the process one of the hens has chased them and pecked at them. I assume she's just putting them in their place in the pecking order, but is there anything I should be doing about it? The...

WEIRD or ODD Eggs pics!!!! :)

Our girls did that a few times when they were new layers, they were double yolkers. Most of them were normal and delicious inside - one of them though was SUPER bloody and gross inside. Now they routinely lay "normal" sized eggs and none have had blood or blood spots in a couple months...

How long will they stay fresh?

How long can fresh, unfertilized eggs sit at room temp (on counter for instance) and still be good to eat? How long in the refrigerator? Looking for a general ball-park time frame. Thanks!!

    First Egg at 22 Weeks

One of our girls, Myra, laid our first egg on Sunday! Our 4 SLWs were exactly 22 weeks old and we are so excited to finally start seeing some eggs! The first one was laid right on the coop ground, but today (monday) she laid another one and used the "new" nest box! This egg thing is fun!

What's the Harm in Too Much Calcium?

I've read on here that you don't start feeding them layer feed until they start laying eggs, and then I didn't listen. My girls are 14 weeks old and they were almost out of their chick starter/grower. I didn't really want to buy another bag of chick starter not knowing how long they would take...

    Relative Concerned about Bird Flu

Thanks! I've been reading online and it seems like they would have to catch it from the droppings of an infected bird flying directly overhead of them and pooping into their run? I just wanted to make sure, so I didn't have people afraid to come to my house! :o)

3rd egg came with out shell

Here's what you should do... hold a frying pan right under her when she gets to her perch to lay the egg, let the egg fall into the pan, bring pan to stove, fry it up! She saved you the whole cracking the egg shell part!

    Relative Concerned about Bird Flu

So we're new to chickens, and I had a relative ask me if I needed to worry about bird flu? Is there anything to worry about?

    Coop Picture, Winter Advice Needed

The ceiling is solid with roof above that. Our coop is the old wood storage room of the workshop shed. Only openings are the window and the chicken door window. I guess I get confused about the difference between a coop being drafty and being ventilated. The window and the chicken door have...

    Coop Picture, Winter Advice Needed

Oops, typo - we have 4 chickens not 3. Thanks for the advice! Yes that's a poop board on the far end there. Any other advice from other experienced chicken keepers?

    Coop Picture, Winter Advice Needed

So here's our coop, nearly complete. We have 3 SLWs. It is nice and airy during the summer, but I want to make sure it's going to be good for our usually cold Minnesota winters. The chicken door is a hardware cloth window for ventilation, and the large window was there before or I would have...
