We hatched these four seven weeks ago. We got the eggs from a breeder who claimed the ones that hatched as a New Hampshire (brown one that looks like a pullet so far- 3rd photo) and the other three as Isa Brown crosses. The "Isa Brown crosses" don't look like they have much Isa Brown in them so...
Over the past year we've had 3 chickens die.
The first, a light sussex a bit under 30 weeks old, was found near a pile of rocks in the yard dead last summer (December).
9 weeks ago a mixed breed rooster about 12 weeks old was found near the same rock pile, also dead, just 15 minutes after...
True....buttons could cause trouble...
I think velcro will work once the rooster stops trying to remove it every time I tighten it. I've already noticed he doesn't worry about it as much now as the first sock I put on him, even though that sock was a lot looser than his velcro collar is...
One...
He crowed.... but I checked on him and it had come loose a bit...I've tightened it and haven't heard him since, but I'm thinking I don't want to really have to tighten it every day. Maybe buttons or something would be better, although that would be less adjustable.
I'll try this for a couple...
Finished the muffler, so I thought I would take some pics now...
He was annoyed for a bit....
But he soon forgot about it....
And it wasn't before you wouldn't have known he was wearing it.
I guess we'll find out how effective it is tomorrow morning...
I tried again, this time with a home-made "rooster muffler"...a velcro collar. It worked when I finally got it tight enough (I'm a bit cautious)...but I didn't expect it to go so tight, so there wasn't enough velcro holding it on, and it has now loosened it again...I'll try again soon
We've just had two chicks hatch - one is not far off 48 hours, the other is about 3 hours old. When the second chick dried out we put it in the brooder and the older one, who has become extremely active, started pecking at it, and it looks quite rough. Is this normal...(older chick pictured below).
