    Hurricane season

I have only been a chicken owner for about a year, and we didn't have any hurricanes last year (south Louisiana). Now that I've got my coop and run and a larger flock, I'm afraid of how they will hold up in hurricane/tropical storm winds. How do you prepare for hurricanes or high winds? I don't...

    Best knife for gutting

Hi everyone. I am looking for recommendations on a good, sharp knife that makes skinning and gutting a rooster easier. Please let me know if you have a favorite!

    Cooked my first rooster

Well, I did it. My rooster Roux made the best gumbo I've ever cooked. I hatched 18 of his babies, so I have more roosters on the way, so it was time to let him go. I cut his throat to let him bleed, but I found out my knives are not sharp enough. It was hard to do and I'm scared that he suffered...

    Shooting a rooster?

I know it's not ideal. But has anyone killed a rooster with a .22 rifle? If one were to do this, where is the best place to shoot?

Hen kicking eggs out of nest

I have one hen who really wants to lay on eggs. Every day I find her on the eggs, I remove them, and she gets up leaves the nest and acts just like the rest of them. But she has started kicking the eggs of 1 hen out of the nest. The same hen- she will only kick hers out. She lays on everyone...

    Frozen eggs

In the winter storm we just had in Louisiana, 2 of my eggs froze yesterday before I got to them. They expanded and cracked, but the membrane appears to still be in tact. Does anyone else ever get frozen eggs, and do you use them?

    Help! Newborn chick problem

My 3rd of 5 eggs hatched today and it seems to have a problem. It got out of its shell nicely and acted just like the others. He has a lot of energy, chirping, walking, etc. But I noticed something that looks like intestines hanging out of his vent. It doesn't look like an egg sac. I've tried to...

    First hatch!

I have 4 eggs in the incubator and today is day 23, and the first one poked a hole! So excited! I've had the temp at 100 instead of 102 (still air) so I guess that's the reason for the 2 day delay. I need a better thermometer next time. The only problem is I can't get the humidity above 50%...

    Overheated eggs!

I put my eggs in yesterday and temp was right at 100 for a few hours so I considered it stable. When I woke up this morning it was 110! I know that's way too hot. But since it was just day 1, is there a chance they'll still do ok, or is it pretty certain that they are ruined? Thanks.

No eggs for a week, then laying again

I know most chickens molt and stop laying for the winter, right? We are in south Louisiana so I wonder how that will work here. Some of mine started laying this fall, and some started laying after thanksgiving. Everything was fine till last week. They all stopped completely for 5 days. Then...

    Random egg nutrition question

Anyone have any idea how long a human can live on 1 egg (and water) a day? No other food at all. Odd question, I know :).

    Strange shaped egg

Please excuse the dirty egg, but can you see the bulge on the left side? Every egg I've ever gotten from this hen has had this odd shape. It always bulges out on one side. I'm guessing it's something about how her reproductive system works. The eggs are fine on the inside. I just find it odd!

    Egg from the same hen?

Hi all. I have spring chicks which are starting to lay one by one. So far 2 of 4 are laying. Today, I found a completely different shaped and colored egg. My oldest hen has been laying for 3 months now and every single one of her eggs is like the one in the left. Never variation. Another has...

    Christmas coop decor

Does anyone put Christmas lights on their coop and decorate it for Christmas? Ours is right next to the house and visible from the road, so I'm thinking about putting Christmas lights on it .

    Need advice- Freeze warning tonight!

I know that my chickens can handle the cold. Obviously many of you have happy chickens in much colder climates than mine (I'm in Louisiana!). My only concern is the sudden temp change for my chickens. We have been in the 80s lately during the day, 60s at night. Tonight we have a freeze warning...

Video of my hen laying an egg :)

I wanted to see her process, so I left my iPhone in the coop and got some footage :)

    First egg!!

I'm so happy to finally have an egg! I have 5 hens, 2 right at 6 months, and the other 3 are at 3 months. One of the older ones (Nugget) gave me a beautiful egg today! It is 100% perfect too. It's about the size of a medium egg, maybe slightly smaller. I'm so happy!!

    Chickens playing dead

I know what a dead chicken looks like because I've lost 2. My hens scare me all the time by laying down on their sides with their legs sticking out. They look dead. I'm always scared to walk up to them and make sure they are alive, but they always pop up when I get closer. Is this normal? I did...

    Questions about manure

I looked for a thread about using chicken manure but didn't see one. Many people are using chicken poop as fertilizer but are you drying it before placing in your gardens? How are you collecting and storing it? Thanks!
