    HELP PLEASE. Broody runner problems.

Hi all, need some advice please.... Two of my runners are sitting on around 20 eggs, the first eggs are at about day 26 and tonight I found one that had been thrown out of the nest and smashed open with nearly formed duckling inside. The same happened last year and out of a dozen eggs we got...

    drakes lost his mojo!

Thanks sourland. Maybe I shouldn't worry then. He is usually very protective of the girls but since the two youngest were introduced its like he is overwhelmed. Ots been a few weeks, maybe more now and he seems healthy enough, just not as interested in them. I thought 2 drakes for 7 ducks...

    Please help...egg eating.

Thanks for replying Miss L. I don't think I know anyone with a camera. It's getting close to hatch (maybe) day anyway is I guess seperating the flock and putting some chick crumb in with the Brodie's isn't a bad idea anyway.

    Please help...egg eating.

I have four broody runners plus another girls and a drake. They were sitting on 14 eggs and over the past week, that has gone down to 9. The first three completely disappeared with no trace of shell etc. The last two, have both been eaten in daylight, leaving half the shell of one and just a...

    Help! Missing eggs

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't think it can be a magpie as the run is secure. At least it's definitely bird proof. I'm back to thinking about rats at the moment but there's no egg shells left.

    Help! Missing eggs

I'm baffled...... I have 6 runners, 5 girls and their drake. Three are broody and it's day 15. They were on 14 eggs between them and I'm removing fresh eggs each day. Over the last three days, we have 'lost' three eggs. They are now on 11. There's no sign of broken eggs, no shells or pieces. The...

    Broody runner duck

Runners are said to be poor broodies and mothers too. Its generally accepted that it's been bred out of them to make them better egg producers. That said, heaps of people have their runners raise a brood so fingers crossed we are the exceptions to the rule!

    Broody runner duck

I would expect so, but I'm not sure it's a guarantee. That's Stan in my avatar, he was indeed a drake but sadly he passed away shortly after we got him. He was very ill when we got him anyway.

    Broody runner duck

Fortunately I can get to mine and so have marked the brooding eggs with a pencil and remove the new ones each day. Unfortunately a second has gone broody too and she is less dedicated. She will push her way in and makes a second mini nest but because of this I think gradually they will rotate...

The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Hi all, I have a basic question! One of my runners has gone broody. She is currently sitting on 13eggs. If she stops laying but my other 4 girls carry on, they will lay in her nest and I will have 17 eggs, followed by 21 the next day etc. how do I know which eggs are the ones being incubated and...

    small yard pond

Haha! There is a series of videos on YouTube by someone called ponddigger, I think they are titled 'patio pond with live bog filter' or something very similar. Really good videos, and whilst not enough to clean a duck pond alone, I'm hoping with a decent filter, a larger scale and allowing the...

    small yard pond

Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for! Great, comprehensive thread and all steps included. Thank you. I think I will try something similar but I might try and also filter the water through a live bog type filter with plants as well. Obviously that area will be seperate and fenced off from...

    small yard pond

Ok, I have a question. Its about duck ponds. I live in a suburban home. My garden is not big enough for a huge pond so I currently use a kiddy pool and dump it. It works fine but I would like something more natural and nice to look at. Im happy to spend time and effort making something and...

    anyone in England ?

Just a standard duck layers pellet. The brand escapes me but will let you know if you like? Treats most days of sweetcorn and peas and they forage the garden for a good few hours most days.

    anyone in England ?

Thanks Dazza, I love the runners, just started laying last week too, lovely eggs but I fancy adding a few hens as well. Probably only 4 to start with but have room for a few more. I would like a little variety and as much as the ducks are brilliant, it would be nice to have some hens that don't...
