Welcome to BYC! I am also a South African up in Johannesburg and simply love chickens. I have two fully grown hens, 5 little chicks that hatched here and are now 12 weeks old. I am hoping for at least three hens out of them. Then on in October I bought two Brahma hens who are now 23 weeks...
Hi there, one of my young hens is showing the same symptoms - tired and only eating a little. Thing is, I am new to chickens and dont know what to give her!
I also had a grown rooster last ear which I had to give away. I did not plan to have any again, but, before I gave him away, my hen laid 5 eggs, 3 hatched and two were roosters! I am so fond of them and love their crowing early in the morning, just wish my neighbours would too
I am busy...
It sure is pretty! I have 10 hens and 2 roosters, Sadly the roosters have to go because even though I have a large yard, the neighbours don't like to be woken up at 4am!
Born and raised in Cape Town, now living in Johannesburg! Have you ever been here? It is the most beautiful place on earth, and up in Joburg we have the most gorgeous weather!
Mine are still young but I am looking forward to getting many more eggs come spring! I have just ordered some wood shavings to putjoy it! Here in Joburg we have the most glorious in my coops - hope the girls will enjoy it. I am not too sure what breed mine is though.
I like some country music too but more jazzy country. How many chickens you have? I have 12 now and get 2 eggs a day. It is sunny weather here in Jo'burg and there by you?
Hi there, how about a friend from Johannesburg, South Africa! I'm raising chickens in the big city. I am a farm girl deep in my heart. Love reading, gardening and arts & crafts. I love a variety of music
Yes I do, there are 7 young hens in the coop directly next to them and i expect them to start laying very soon. My original hen laid five eggs of which 3 hatched and the two are roosters and the one is a hen and they are now 8 months old. She and the mother are laying. I read on google that...
I cannot believe it! My Rooster laid an egg. This morning when I went to the coop, I found a tiny egg, the size of a pigeon's egg in the nest. I googled and found that this is a rare occurrence! Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks
Hi there, I am thrilled to be part of this community. I have been reading your site and getting valuable info! I am from South Africa, in Sandton, Johannesburg. I have a momma hen called Dotty and she hatched three eggs. The chicks are now grown-up. It turned out that only one is a hen...
My "rooster" just laid an egg!!! it is the size of a pigeon's egg. I googled it because I could not believe my eyes, I found out that this happens very rarely. apparently when the rooster reaches maturity, it sometimes lays an egg!
