Aren't the Boschveld chickens the most popular there? They have great coloration and I understand make good layers. The Australs will do great also.

Yes, and that is probably where we'll end up going - but I haven't found a supplier close to me yet. The other 2 breeds I can get from a supplier that is a few minutes away from me, but the suppliers for the Boschvelders are all much further away. The ones I've found so far anyway! My plan for the moment is to chat to the supplier of the other two and see what she recommends, then I'll take it from there.

Welcome to BYC! I am also a South African up in Johannesburg and simply love chickens. I have two fully grown hens, 5 little chicks that hatched here and are now 12 weeks old. I am hoping for at least three hens out of them. Then on in October I bought two Brahma hens who are now 23 weeks old. My one hen laid her first egg today after hatching out her chicks! I am looking forward to the others laying soon. Good luck with you chickens
